This is new speculation, but effectively an old thread. I couldn't find the old one on eight pages of TT. After this weekend's performance I wouldn't rate him. He might offer more goal threat than Ledders, for example, but not more fight and tenacity. ( I chose Ledders as to compare him to any of our other midfielders is laughable and he wouldn't be any higher up the pecking order).

18 months ago I would have been keen probably even 12 months but not now. Too inconsistent and at best, only as good as what we already have

I think that Shelvey option should be explored if only to gauge his true commitment to the cause and willingness to rise his game given his patchy but evident ability to really achieve. He is undoubtedly a player capable of delivering to a very high standard but hasn't done so on a consistent basis due to lack of self-discipline and personal ambition.

Whats the point he would not get in our current Midfield.

Surely Shelvey would only be considered if we let, say, Jedinak or Ledley leave in January.

Surely Shelvey would only be considered if we let, say, Jedinak or Ledley leave in January. Given that he naturally plays much further forward I doubt it. Part of the problem at Swansea seems to be that he has been playing far deeper than normal. It does not seem to suit him at all. If we were to buy him I would hope he would be played in Punch or Chamakh's position.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

They need to use McArthur, Ledley, and Jedinak in the holding midfield role and move Cabaye up to #10. Then you'd have Punch as a sub, able to fill in at wing or replace Cabaye in the middle. Either way, we have depth with defensive minded midfielders, so move Cabaye up. I always thought that's what we paid for, not for him to sit in the holding midfield role. Would be pretty disappointed if we invested further in central midfield, before targeting a striker and/or a centre half.

From what I have seen of Shelvey I think he would be truly awful in the number 10 role. His passing can be great or woeful - great for England when I saw him but woeful against us last week. He also needs time to think rather than have an immediate pass in mind. To me he is a central midfielder who likes to get forward. Cabaye in the number 10 role is also a no from me. He picks off opposition players so well when playing deep and then creates much of our forward movement. I love Jedi to bits and he wins the ball in the same way but alas his passing is nowhere near the caliber of Cabaye's and thus nothing positive materializes. Chamakh has been the best player for us in this position but injuries and the fact he will likely leave in the summer means we need a replacement. Puncheon has done well but he has faltered this year and is now usually deployed wide left. Perhaps this is the role Mutch will develop in to. Quality number 10's are as rare as Dodo droppings and more difficult to find than out and out strikers - the likes of Coutinho and Ozil do not come cheap. Of course it is highly likely that AP sees Bolasie as our number ten long term. My preference, however, has been for him to be wide left.
