Johnny (Budgie) Byrne

I remember Johnny as my hero back when I first started watching Palace at Selhurst, standing in the mud at the Whitehorse Lane end, behind the goal of my number 1 hero Vic Rouse,(who I tried to be like..fat chance.) Johnny , was in a class of his own, just like Wilf,Yannick, are today..what a player..nobody could touch him, unbelievable for the day, as don't forget the ball was leather, and a damn sight heavier, more so when wet.. which was often.. the boots were like 'diving boots', and heavy,but Johnny performed 'magic'..I for one think Johnny Byrne deserves to be remembered in a big way at Selhurst..so how about it Steve?

I started watching Palace when i lived in west Norwood as my local team when they were in the third division south, just before Johnny appeared on the scene.All the other boys at my school, Tulse Hill Comp, were either Chelsea or Arsenal and would mock me as a lowly Palace fan.When Johnny appeared all of a sudden Palace started to gain credibility and it was a joy to watch his amazing skills.

No sorry those two are only fit to clean his boots, he was a brilliant player, and a family friend he was my uncle Vince Blore's best friend and was always round our house when I lived in Upper Selsdon road between 1953 and 1958.

While we on the subject can anyone help me with this signed picture of the great man himself, I acquired the book about ten years ago, there is no other signed pictures in the book and I have seen other signatures that do not resemble this one but bearing in mind this could be one of his early signature's it could differ, Edited by bomb001 (11 Aug 2015 8.25am) Edited by bomb001 (11 Aug 2015 9.32am)

What a player! I used to go and watch the players train in the mornings at Selhurst in the early 60's. I was 15 years old and with 3 other kids had our picture taken for a newspaper, with Johnny, by one of the dugouts. Something I shall never forget even though I have since lost the picture. Great memories of a really great player.

My brother and I as we only lived in Upper Selsdon Road we used to walk to the Purley Way playing fields where they trained in the afternoon, and after training Cyril Spiers would let some of us kids have a kick around with the players, loved it the players were great fun.

Didn't see Budgie first time around at the Palace but did see him when he came back to us around 1966. Unfortunately his best days were behind him then.
