Saw a very interesting clip discussing this issue and thought that HOL, being the liberal, tolerant and intellectual hub that it is, would be the perfect place to post it and wait for the sensible, thought-provoking and respectful discussion that will inevitably follow....

Britain is one of the most tolerant countries in the world and I am sick to death of people saying it is otherwise.

I suppose it is, if you're poor.

I think the issue within this country is the immigrants who do not wish to join society. If I went to a foreign country, I would try to learn the language, integrate and dress as the locals. The main issue is generally integration. If you don't try, why should you be accepted. If you don't want to be here, go home.
I am personally not racist as many years ago, I had girlfriends who were black. I am a middle class middle-aged white male. I live in a part of the country that has few blacks. I can't speak for London, Birmingham, Bradford etc.
I can't speak for the rest of the country.

Sorry, that's just a cracking line.

I think what Akala in that video is talking more about is society as a whole and our complicity in our government's acts in other countries, our general perception of migrants differentiating based on skin colour. If someone comes in to your home, it is incumbent on you to be hospitable, not on the guest, so why doesn't this extend to us being hospitable to immigrants coming in to this country?

People prefer to live with people who share the same language, racial characteristics, religion and culture. Always have and always will.

I thought the part I've highlighted in red was amusing as well, presumably all immigrants should wear a suit, as most middle class, middle aged men tend to do!!

I watched the vid and Akala has some very salient points, the best was Aboriginal Australians were classed as flora as fauna until 1967, WTF! Yeah, we should follow their example

My 2p worth again:

By the way, did anyone watch 'Frankie Boyle's Election Autopsy'?

Like a lot of BBC comedy it was a bit hit and miss. Clearly the comedians were a bit leftist, anti-UKIP but I don't mind that too much. It's irreverent and anti-politics, although interesting how BBC 'satire' follows EXACTLY the same pattern regardless of channel or programme (Cameron is posh, Miliband useless, Clegg a traitor, Farage a racist)

Anyway, did anyone see the monologue about supposedly 'racist to the core' Britain by the rapper guy at the end?

It was undoubtedly eloquent and interesting and it was quite well-informed. But it was NOT comedy or satire. It was a bald political statement and went completely unchallenged for a good six or seven minutes.

Whether you agree or disagree, it is desperately poor standards from a supposedly impartial broadcaster and I was pretty shocked the BBC put it out.
