Thinking about tomorrow's game I wonder how many old codgers like me remember when Man Utd came to Selhurst and we walloped them 5 - 0 and Charlie Cook got two I think. Come on lads speak up !.

Don Rogers got 2, Paddy Mulligan got 2 and Alan Whittle scored on his Palace debut. A truly amazing win for Palace.

I'm certainly an old codger, and I remember that game. But am I correct in thinking that John McCormick once scored against Manchester United in another match? Memory fading, but I seem to recall a long-range effort at the Holmesdale end, on a muddy pitch, with the lights on. Can anyone corroborate?

I was there too! Alan Whittle had "inspired" our defender, Mel Blyth to hit him & get sent off only shortly before Whittle came to us I think I recall.
On the bus home afterwards there were 2 "Manchester United supporters" shouting "We are the champions" out the window as we passed Alders; shoppers would not have guessed Palace had just thrashed them. Didn't we still go down that season though?

Well I am 63 this year so perhaps I am nearing "Old codger" status !

I recall a game where John McCormick came forward with the ball further than he had ever been, approached the Holmesdale goal took a gigantic swing at the ball from outside the box and it flew into the net much to his and the crowds surprise ! Think it was a toe punt and it arrowed into the goal ! Can't remember the opponents !

A Stanna ride in to the bedroom, move the tumbler with my false teeth in, under the bed, move the potty, there's mi programmes - ooh me back's gone. Where is it? December 16 1972 Palace: Jackson; P Mulligan; T Taylor; I Phillip; B Bell; M Blyth; J Hughes; D Payne; A Whittle; C Cooke; D Rogers sub J Craven (not B Kellard as the program states). Bobby Charlton was off with flu, but D Law, A Stepney, T Dunne, D Saddler and Willie Morgan and co were just some of the victims. United manager Frank O'Farrell was sacked as a result - it was my first game at Palace - I was a seven year old Man U fan, two weeks later just b4 my eighth birthday I woke up one morning as a Palace fan - a little claret and blue glazier. Roger's third goal was an improvement on Pele's famous dummy on the keeper, Whittle's fourth was simply beautiful, and the denouement fifth with Brian Moore's "this will be the biggest thing this club's ever done" as a backdrop to the ball being contemptuously stroked into the goal by Rogers with the United defence in remote tatters is pure folklore. Watch it here ... [Link]

5-1 v. Sheffield U, 1971/72 ?

I`m 65 in 20 days, and am definitely an old codger!

Yes, I think you're right. It was the 5 goal scoreline that led me to get mixed up with the Man. Utd. game.

Happy 65th on 31st May!

I think that Sheff Utd side were top of the table, or thereabouts, Tony Currie and co, and John Hughes hit one from 25 yards that is one of the hardest shots I've ever seen - but that's not to be confused with the McCormick punt. It was on MOTD so it can be youtubed.
