My partner and I are looking to go away for up to 3 weeks to America this month, and are currently looking at:

New York -> Las Vegas -> Los Angeles -> San Francisco -> Yosemite National Park

If anyone has any recommendations of places to stay, eat, visit in these cities and how long to stay in each place please let me know!

Obvious one, but if you're in Vegas, please do the Skywalk at the Grand Canyon.

We were out in Phoenix and flew up to the Vegas side to do it. Just awe inspiring...! We did a helicopter down, boat ride along then helicopter back up. I have to go back again one day...

I've just got back from a 2 week road trip between Vegas, LA and San Francisco.

Vegas, if you haven't been before, is difficult to describe. Personally I love it but it can get on top of you if you stay for too long. My favourite hotel there is the Hard Rock. It's probably a ten minute walk from the strip (taxis are cheap though) but the rooms are deluxe and good value for money. Also the hotel is not too manic to walk around which is nice when you wake up hungover. Additionally it's right beside the German Hofbrauhaus which I would strongly recommend paying a visit to if you like a beer. The best pool in Vegas though belongs to Mandalay Bay and is only accessible to guests (unless you blag your way in) so if you're planning to spend a decent percentage of the daytime drinking cockatils in the sun, I would consider that.

LA I didn't like at all. Perhaps I didn't quite get it or didn't see the right areas but to me it felt run down and as though the streets were highly punctuated with crazy, homeless people even for an American city. It does however boast the Universal and Disney parks if you're into that kind of thing and both are good fun. The Disney park is actually in Anaheim which itself is a very nice area and the Universal Park is in Hollywood. If you do the latter I would strongly advise paying the money for the VIP backlot tour which lasts a few hours and shows you sets from a huge range of popular TV shows and movies. Well worth it.

San Francisco was awesome, easily one of my favourite cities and in fact it impacted on me so much that I left considering applying for jobs there. For quite an urban city it is incredibly relaxed and friendly and an awesome place to walk around. I'd highly advise an early morning stroll down to Pier 39 to see the seals before you have breakfast and from there you can take one of the boat tours and visit the aquarium. The only issue with it is that it is quite expensive to stay centrally, although we did go at Easter which may have driven prices up. If you are driving whilst over there you absolutely must do the Pacific Coast Highway drive through Big Sur, the scenery is absolutely incredible.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

Guntri give me a call - I can talk you through all those places and give you great advice based on my many trips and experiences (good and bad!).

PS Pick up the Virgin USA catalogue too - lots of stuff in there!

Regarding the Pacific Coast Highway, I did this drive almost 30 years ago and made a point of driving from SF to LA, as driving on the righthand side of the road, more of the "view" could be appreciated. Whether this still applies today, possibly a more recent visitor could advise, but it certainly worked for me.

Try Americansky.co.uk for packages. Used them for a similar trip in October and just booked Miami on Sat with them for Sept.

Do everything you can in San Fran, the best see on the West Coast without a shadow of a doubt.

You can't go to America for the last 3weeks of the season - who's gonna run the Hol?

You're absolutely correct, doing it from San Francisco to LA rather than the other way round give a better view.

New York (assuming the City not the State)--Eat some Cheesecake. Street food in NYC with a longer queue can be pretty good. A good cheap ride with decent views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty--try the Staten Island Ferry.

Los Angeles--Food: Korean Tacos, any Mexican, if you must have fast food: the locals like In-n-out Burger for a Hamburger (also Vegas). I find the La Brea tar pits strangely fascinating (Miracle Mile area on Wilshire). Farmer's markets in LA are pretty good--I went to the one in Santa Monica.

San Francisco--Seafood especially Dungeness Crabs and Halibut. Avoid Fisherman's Wharf (except to see the Sea Lions). If you can book a trip to Alcatraz, probably worth it. Muir Woods is pretty!

Best thing I did in San Francisco was hire a mountain bike, cycle to and across the golden gate bridge, then upto the iconic lookout point over the bridge. Cycle around the bay, to get a ferry back to downtown.

As far as New York goes, goto brunch at the Loeb boathouse in central park.

Also, in Vegas goto Fremont St.

Whilst there goto the restaurant on the 50th floor of Binions. The most amazing view of Las Vegas whilst having a meal.
