Charles Walker's emotional speech in the House of Commons earlier: Good to see a bit of straight talking rather than the usual. He'd been tasked with completing a report on how the speaker is elected. This was then suddenly brought forward by Hague on the last day of Parliament and a vote was forced through on the exact opposite of his recommendation - a secret ballot, in a plot to oust John Bercow. Walker wasn't told any of this and wasn't best pleased. Many Labour MPs had planned to be in their constituencies today due to no major business, while the Conservatives had a pre-election briefing for all their MPs. Crafty stuff but the vote narrowly failed.

I watched that. I thought the whole thing was shabby. I was pleased it got voted down. If the Tories want rid of him, do it properly. There are plenty of MPs on both sides of the house who don't like him. Bercow comes across as a w***er with a chip on his shoulder. I thought Dan Hodges piece on him was spot on. Bercow is an ok Speaker of the House, but he is not fair.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

Was utterly cowardly (and as NOX suggested probably unnecessary). Was a shameful way for Hague to leave the Commons. I have always quite liked William Hague but it was a pathetic final act.
