It may seem PC and in a way it is sexist (only in that it was invented by men) but it started in the Soviet Union to celebrate the removal of the veil - International Women's Day that is.

The Soviet Union has a very large Muslim population that especially in the South of Russia - Ingushettia, Chechnia, Daghastan as well as countries like Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgistan, Turkmenistan etc were, before the Bolshevik revolution and Bolshevik/Russian occupation of said States/Countries very conservative - i.e. no sex before marriage, long clothes, head scarves - the veil etc.

So this day is really a celebration of the emancipation of women and the removal of the veil due to the soviet philosophy that religion doesn't exist and that education for all - including women - was a necessity for all.

In other words, women should be treated equally.

Living here (Azerbaijan) there are a few women that wear the veil and headscarves, but far more that wear whatever they like, jeans, trousers, short skirts, tight shirts etc - so this day celebrates that independence far more than just celebrating say "Aren't women great, buy them a bunch of flowers".

There is a bit of relevance towards civilisation moving forward and highlighting the fact that women are not like the Indian Rapists seem to believe they are - quite a poignant reminder in that regard.
