This story was covered on the lunchtime BBC News and the reporter said it was going on at an industrial scale.... the News of the World hacking was a "cottage industry" by comparison. Will the Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People now voluntarily close and do the decent thing? A lot of lefties on here felt Murdoch had no option but to close the NotW back then when the revelations about hacking were divulged. I won't hold my breath waiting.......

Murdoch had wanted to start a Sun on Sunday for years. Hacking was the catalyst. As for the mirror. Maybe not close, but throw the book at those in charge.

Well I never.... Was bleeding obvious they were at it, and that those in charge knew about it.

There is a case for stating that some phone hacking could be justified. Although not obtained by hacking, the Telegraph published MPs expenses when they had been illegally obtained (although not by hacking), for example. However The NoTW and The Mirror were hacking peoples phones on the off chance that there would he something interesting which can never be justified. The NoTW got caught first which is why it was such a big news story, along with the fact that Cameron employed its editor when there were persistent rumours of wrong doing and that fact that Cameron and Blair were both so cosy with Murdoch and his empire. The NoTW didn't really close down, it just re-branded itself as The Sun.

The question of "public interest" comes into it as well.A defence of "public interest" is available in privacy/obtaining confidential information cases. Its in the public interest to expose malfeasance by MP's. Somewhat less so when it comes to exposing celebs shagging etc. Edited by legaleagle (04 Mar 2015 1.39pm)
