A stranger to this side may wonder about the cruel sarcasm of some nick names used by the fans about some players. Doris comes to mind. Never a more loved or respected man than our Paul. Puts me in mind of 'Mary' Houseman. Any others?

Going well back in the day (about 1910) George Woodger was called "Lady" due to his twinkle-toed ball skills, according to my late Granddad who saw him playing at the Crystal Palace. And then there was Bert Howe, who was always "Chopper" for obvious reasons as any opposing winger would testify.

From the Palace archives .... Bert "chopper" Howe from the 1960s. Goalkeeping legend Paul Hammond was known as "teflon" in some quarters. I think I remember Cliff Jackson, again from the 1960s, being referred to as "Gladys" Edited by Pete53 (09 Jul 2014 11.22am)
