I'm feeling my age, can it really be 25 years since we beat Blackburn in the Play-Offs, lost 9-0 at Anfield, got revenge in the FAC semi-finals and came SO agonizingly close to beating Man U at Wembley??
25 years.....but I've got a feeling we are going to be laying some of those ghosts to rest in the next few seasons. All those 'Heroic Failures' of the past can be redeemed and a more solid Premiership identity built for this club, which, let's face it, has bloody well earnt it.
Here's to the next 25!

And 25 years ago one never heard certain words or sayings that have crept in :
"Turnover" "False No 9", "Second phase" "Tiki Taka" etc etc.
In fact what I have been hearing recently is "Anywhere else on the pitch it's a foul" which I never used to hear in bygone days.

And what ever happened to the "Sweeper" ?

Nice to remember being up for the cup. Clever inside-forward play. Over-lapping full-backs, now that was a new concept...any more?

Over-lapping full-backs,

Which reminds me that we have now heard of the "Underlapping Full-Back". Furthermore, in bygone days you never saw full-backs with their hands tucked by their sides so that they are not accused of handball. And of course we now hear of hands "Being in an un-natural position".

I still can't get my head around "Not interfering with play".

Indeed this has crept into commentaries in recent times, not forgetting "Harsh" when discussing penalties IE "It would have been harsh if it had been given".

And what happened to the near-post corner flicked on for someone to attack ? Andy Thorn used to flick on !

You could add "Squad player", "Director of Football" and "Billionaire Owner" to the list.....oh, and near post flick ons didn't survive coaches working out that the 'keeper was the one to deal with them.

And many of "Advanced age" like myself will recall the days at Selhurst (And other grounds) when the half-time scores were revealed by placing cards etc against boards with A,B,C etc etc - The cards denoted the score and one had to look at the programme to see which game was represented by A,B,C etc etc ! No Mobiles to keep track of the scores !!!!
In those days, supporters used to carry transistor radios and at the end of the game there could be a flock of fans following a supporter with a radio as they wanted to know the final scores !

And whatever happened to teams entering the field of play before the start of the game separately and NOT together as they do now ? A big cheer for your own team and a big Boo for the opposition !

There was a time, not so long ago, when diving was a rarity, something Europeans did. If players in the league dived they were laughed at and derided by friend and foe alike. Alan Whittle was loved for his imaginative dives, often suggested he could fall in his own area and slide all the way into the opposition's box!
