We have the joint 6th best defence in the league. This is amazing and something I thought i'd never say at the beginning of the season. Even with Holloways bad tactics, we still didn't conceed too many (other than Fulham). Well done to the players for this. If we stay up, this will be the reason. I know many would argue that we've sacrificed attack for defence, but unless you have the fire power of Man City or Liverpool, there is no point in trying to out score the other team - look at Arsenal's gung ho approach to the Chelsea game - you need to have defence at your foundation. We've all said it, if you can limit your opponents goals you are always in with a chance of nicking a goal and this keeps the crowd on your side and noisy. The games that go flat are always the ones where that 2nd or 3rd goal goes in. In saying that if our 1st choice front line is on form we look dangerous on the counter. This would be Murray and Chamakh up front with Puncheon and Bolasie on the wings imo. More and more I am less worried when the other team has the ball. Yes it can be frustrating as we can't attack when they have it, but I am not so worried about conceeding and this stat shows that.

The big question is, if we stay up, how and where to strengthen, because based on this stat it certainly isn't defence unless it's for cover.

What do others think?

I think that is AMAZING! I was so worried about our defence, but give credit to Ollie for seeing their potential and Pulis for organising them.

Next year, providing we stay up, if we get some attacking options that can thrive from the way were set up, we could really push up provided the passion is there

If we remain in this league then we must look to strengthen all areas of the team and that includes the defence.

I would expect to see a new left back with Parr as cover and Moxey leaving.

We will say farewell to Ramage, McCarthy and Gabbidon meaning we need one, perhaps two new CB's

Ward and Mariappa, all being well, will be our right backs.

What we need elsewhere depends on who TP will be looking to offload along with Campana and Kebe who have both effectively gone. (Loans with a view to permanent transfer at end of season).

I think Bannan may leave and KG be released, Thomas will go if we can find a team to take him and Jerome is, of course on loan. Not sure TP sees Gayle as a player we need but I am sure he will keep Chamakh,

That would mean another wide man or two with Ince, Zaha, Moses all springing to mind. For me, if Norwich go down I would like to see Redmond come in and wanted him here this season.

We need another central midfielder in the Adam mould i.e can tackle, score and create. Actually Adam himself would do just fine.

Up front I would love to see us get Rhodes from Blackburn and McCormack off Leeds but the cost may be prohibitive.

That leaves the creative role. Chamakh plays it well now and JW will be the boy in a year or so but we still need someone now. Not really got too much of an idea on that just yet.

i am sure we are looking further afield as well and may see a few FRench and Belgium names in our squad next season - hopefully better than Marange.

It is remarkable how we've conceded the 6th least number of goals but imagine if every other team set up like we do? We'd be a lot worst than 6.

For example Arsenal, losing 6-3 to Liverpool we'd never lose by that much but we're obviously a weaker team than Arsenal.

Our style have play has got us to 6th "best defence" but it has also got us to the worst goalscoring team in the league.

Gayle is a strange one. I cant see anyone stumping up the £6m we paid for him and I don't imagine the owners will be too keen to slash his price until he has had a long enough run in the team and its become clear he is not a £6m player. Right now it is not clear. We don't want to be letting him go for peanuts only to find he's playing for Liverpool and getting picked for England in a couple of years. Stan Collymore anyone? In that situation Coppell had a reasonable excuse for letting him go. Wright & Bright were showing no signs of a drop in form therefore a place in the team could not be found for him and Stan wanted to play. A move made sense for everyone at the time. This is not the case with Gayle and unlike Colly we have paid a truck load of money for him. I'd imagine he'll be kept in the squad for at least another season due to his young age and current value.
Chamakh is probably straight forward. I imagine Pulis will want to keep him so it will depend on 1. No bigger clubs with higher wage bills come in for him in the summer (he is allowed to start talking to other clubs from next month) and 2. Can/Will the owners offer the length of contract/wage that Chamakh is looking for to stay?

With that defensive record and if we had only been able to score four or five more goals we could have been home and dry by now. Wouldn't be the Palace way though!

You neglect to mention that the good defensive record makes us (currently) 5 points clear of the bottom 3. No doubt there are some people who would rather we scored more, but at the moment we don't have the luxury of choice. If we have to have one or the other, history shows that a good defence has more chance of keeping us up than a good attack.

This, if it could ever happen, I would take 38 x 0-0's, survival is everything in the first 1 or even 2 seasons with the big boys

In fact, if you just take results from when Pulis appointed, only Man City and Chelsea have conceded fewer (16 & 14 respectively against our 18.)

Rollercoaster ride - never a dull moment with the Palace!

We are getting the chances but due to poor shooting and lack of confidence in the opposing box we aren't taking the chances. We had more chances against Chelsea but still only scored an own goal which gave us the win.

With a new striker next season and a better right back and a play making midfielder we will push on and score more I'm sure

I agree; he went for peanuts at a time when we needed a winger, and who did we sign? Kebe, Jerome, Grandin and Puncheon. Ok, Puncheon's done alright, but the other three were a waste of time and money.

Sometimes transfers don't work out for whatever reason, but I don't think I've ever known so many players to sign for a club and then leave within such a short space of time. Whole approach seems embarrassingly aimless:

Stephen Dobbie
Florian Marange
Jimmy Kebe
Kevin Philiips
Jack Hunt
Jose Campana
Elliot Grandin
