My advice would be to immerse yourselves in every, and I mean every, aspect of graphic design. Go to the design museum, look at what design companies are doing, go to all the graduation shows...read up about typographers, who they are, why they choose the fonts they do. Typography is more than choosing a pretty font. Which is why the Teutonic looking face you've gone for in your example seems bloom in' odd to me.

And then, when you've learnt all the rules. Break them. Good luck
