Am I the only one who disagrees with all the yap about Rooney's goal? It was a good goal, yes, but the number of reports I have seen online claiming that it justifies his £300k per week are utter bollocks. If I was sat on a team's 18 yard line and had noone marking me and time to shoot I would hope to at least connect and work the keeper. No I am not Rooney and not many players could rocket that cross into the top corner as Rooney did, but to justify £300k I'd like to see someone take on three players from Bayern or Barcelona and do the same. World class strike, but not a world class situation.

That club is a multi national corporation that just happens to be located in England. His wages are all about business. He is the "face" of the club particularly in all those far flung places where Manure makes an absolute packet - especially the Far East. Have you never wondered why they always have an East Asian player in their squad who they only seem to play for 60 mins in Champions League games [which are avidly viewed in Asia]? His loss to them would be so much more than what he brings to the game. Your point about a rare defensive lapse is spot on. Why did they give him so much space?

I think it is very hard to justify 300,000 a week for any player including the likes of Messi and Ronaldo who are miles ahead of Rooney in terms of ability. However, silvertop is spot on about the SE Asian market where Moan U are loved and Rooney is the perceived star of their show. Of the hundred plus Thais who have asked me who I support not one knew of Crystal Palace despite them having seen us play gainst the likes of United, Chelski, City, Liverpool, Arsenal etc.

They're paying him around £70m over 4 and a half years, their projected income in that time is £2.5bn. So they're paying him about 3% of their revenue, which in context, really isn't a lot.

Deserves, probably not, commands definately. You could take the top three players at Barca or Real Madrid, and they'd pretty much have had the same finish. Buying those players is another matter. No one is worth 300k a week. But the nature of supply and demand dictates value. Players at the peek of their game with that kind of talent are always in demand and they, their employers and their agents know it.

Your point about a rare defensive lapse is spot on. Why did they give him so much space? Rooney was clever and just dropped off into space.Defenders stayed in line with the 6 yard box and of course nobody went out to pick up Rooney.

To replace Rooney United would have to spend serious money anything between £30-£60m and there is no gaurentee that new signing will fit in or be as good. They know what they have in Rooney, He is class and whilst his wages are obscene United have probably done the right thing.

That goal was as "lucky" as the Fulham goal that everyone raved about. Both had elements of right time right place about them. Yes both wonder strikes but fortunate that all elements came together at the optimum moment. Evra drove deep into our box and does not look up as he squares it back and the ball hits a defender before Rooney hits it in the net. This goal does not justify his wages.... he would need to be scoring 2 or 3 a week like that to even come close to earning a £300K weekly wage packet.

Palace switched off defensively in the second half like they always do against the top sides. Nobody picked up Rooney on the edge of the box and he had a clear shot on goal. It was well taken but I blame the defence more than anything.
