"We need another 17 points. There's 15 games to go and we still need more than a point a game, and in the Premier League that's tough. "It's a massive ask, so we won't get carried away - we can't afford too. We are pleased with the points we have so far but we can't take our foot off the pedal." Tony Pulis 29/01/14 - 9.24am He couldn't be more right about how much of a nail biter the end of this season is going to be. With home games being a massive thing for us in the final run in it makes for some scary reading. 7 home games remain and we face some tough matches which will be very very hard to get a point from let alone 3! West Brom (3) Now that is a massive amount on talent coming to the mighty Selhurst!! Where as the latter part of the season seems as though it will be easier going away from home! Albeit the first two away games are hard, the rest are certainly achievable in gaining maximum points. Arsenal (0) Maybe some wishful thinking in there, it maybe simple sailing till the end of the season. What ever you think it will be it will certainly be a scary old ride to the end of the season!! Can see that Fulham game being MASSIVE!!! What's peoples thoughts the morning after the big result?
Another exciting pre-season ....... |

After much thinking into the wee hours I came to the conclusion that 13 points more will be enough this season. Maybe even just twelve. Doesn't sound much but it still is a huge challenge. 36 points. I really can't see any of the bottom three getting 19 points from their last 15 games. And even if one team does then we always have Fulham and Stoke to rely on to lose their form and drop down. Last night was the biggest three points. That gap to West Ham is looking big right now.

Our home games are tough so the WBA and Villa games are huge and we will have to get results away. For me 15 points will be enough. It is going right down to the wire. Buckle up it's going to be a rough ride.

We don't need 17 points. It's now widely accepted that the safety mark is 38 points and in all probability less. Only 3 teams in the last 10 years, from among 30 relegated, have missed that mark. In the same reason a couple of years ago two went down with 39 (including Ollie's Blackpool team -- in a freak year). And Colin's Sheff Utd. team went down on goal difference with 38. The other 27 sides to reach 38 points all stayed up. Indeed, generally 35 or 36 points will see you safe (not that we'd want to risk it). In some years, 32 would have been enough. Be clear, this is a freak season at both ends of the table. Things are very compressed. That being the case it is highly likely that it's a year where not many points will be needed to survive as teams will take points off each other. In 2009/10 the three teams that went down had 30, 30, and 19 points. This season could well throw up similarly low totals. If we get to 38 points, we are nailed on to survive. I suspect 35 will be enough.

What we'll probably do in Palace style is draw to WBA leaving it slightly difficult, and the 2nd half of the season looks tougher than than the 1st, but I'll think we'll do it, as long as no injuries happen to the likes of Delaney, Jedinak, Jerome/Chamakh (both of them)even

Here are my predictions........ West Brom (3)
It's a tough run in, and the games I suggested 3 points for are must win games. The games I've suggested as draws are must not lose games. Anything else we get against the rest will be a huge bonus. We can stay up, but it will go to the wire and that last game v Fulham will be huge.

Do able, but not easy. The factor we have at the moment is that we're not in an average kind of form, and grinding out points, and not conceeding goals. The big signifier that we can do this has been the resolute perfomances away to Man City and Chelsea where we proved difficult to beat comfortably. Of course theres also the risk of Jerome hitting a purple patch of form and slotting a few home.

I agree we'll likely be safe with 5 more wins, or 3 wins and a mess of draws from the remaining fixtures. I wouldn't count so much on beating Southampton as they're a team that really kicks it up when they show, but I do expect a draw out of that one. Should be able to beat Fulham away, though we won't know for a while if that game will even matter to either team in week 38.

glad all over that the cup competitions are no longer a distraction. Somebody remind me of what cup commitments our relegation-rival teams have ?
