According to The CIES Football Observatory (via the BBC) we have the largest squad in all of Europe's top division.

'Palace have 34 players on their books who have played in this or the previous two seasons'

It has to be said that this of course will be unsettling but also on the positive side shows that there have been chances to be had by fringe players and the unity in the squad over the last 12 months has been despite all the changes.

If I find a more detailed link I'll post it.

This is nonsense.

It says that there are 9 players who are ineligible to play when of course the 7 of these players are all under 21 so can play:

Williams
Campana
Boateng
DeSilva
Appiah
Wynter
Sekajja

Of course there is Garvin and Wilbs who aren't in the squad.

Maybe they would be better having an article about how good our academy is in that there are so many players coming through.

Of course the study is immediately flawed and shows that taking raw data is only worthwhile if you are able to apply context.

"Poor stategic planning" would be fair were it not for the fact the squad that got promoted were amongst relegation favourites - so it stands to reason wholesale changes would be required in a market where moving lower quality players, who are under contract, out of a club is difficult given the financial implications for teams in attempting to sign them - the loan market being much mroe prevalent these days for Football League teams to take on those missing the 25 man squad.

I think the statistics are simply showing once cosequence of how far we have come in such a short space of time.

It is fair to say recruitment was probably excessive in the last window, but the circumstances of our promotion meant that the previous manager wanted to get in as many as he could in all areas.

I find this hard to believe as I believe I saw yesterday that Chelski had 24 players currently out on loan.

SP isn't our chairman, he is co-chairman.

Slightly off Piste and possibly stupid question.....

But if Wilb's isn't in the squad - how come he played on Saturday.....was it because Jerome can't play against Stoke and therefore we can bring him in?

25 man squad doesn't count in Jan so anyone can play.

Arsenal (link tbc) and Manchester City ( [Link] ) have both named youngsters in their squad recently with shirt numbers in the sixties. This would indicate a much larger squad than ours (although possibly not all "seniors").

Additionally, at the time the report was compiled (Oct 1st), we had at least a 43-man squad: [Link]

However, it is likely that no other team has had so many ineligible players on their books this season.
