Just came across this on a Russian football site - apparently it's Selhurst!

Anyone recognise the picture and have any idea when it was taken ?

Probably some time in the 1950s - that's when they still had the hill behind the goal. It's a coloured photo so it can't be much earlier than that.

assuming that's from the old stand, with Whitehorse end on left, the roads/layout behind looks about right as do the houses directly across from the only stand.
reckon it is.
nice pic.

It's definitely Selhurst. I've got that pic in my Palace folder on my computer. I would guess taken in 1968/69 season. If you look carefully, you can see a crane and what looks like building work at the back of what was then the Park Road Side. That could have been the start of the building work for the AJ Wait stand. Hope that helps.

Great picture. Before my time but I remember relatives saying that you could wander freely from the Holmesdale to the Whitehorse or vice versa as the fancy took you. I'm told that the grass bank at the back of the AW was a good place to lounge on a sunny early season game.

Absolutely right.
Supporters used to move from Holmesdale to Whitehorse and vice versa to be behind the goal we were attacking.

Have there been any books published with a photo archive of Selhurst over the years? I know there are one or two on here, but as a young(er) fan I am genuinely interested in a photographic timeline.

I've always wished there was a video documentary of the building of the Holmesdale Stand (because I am an utterly sad b*stard and probably the only person who'd watch it!).

The Holmesdale construction began a couple of years after I watched my first game I think and I did go to a few matches when it was just a construction site, but I'd love to see it being erected (oo-er missus).

It's not the 50's.

Construction work has begun on the Arthur Wait stand (you can see the crane quite clearly on the other side of the pitch) so I guess this was taken in 1968 as the new stand opened in 1969.

I reckon it's taken either at a reserve game or a bit after the Blackpool game on 28.12.68 was abandoned.

Yes I'd go along with the late 60s suggestions for the date of this picture. Could be a reserve match or just a photo taken an hour or so before kick-off. Looks chilly though.

Look at the state of the playing area. A reminder of how most pitches in those days were semi grass-free by January.

I'd also forgotten how shallow the terrace at the Whitehorse end was - as much grass bank as concrete.
