I am new on here, but am an ardent follower. First Palace match against Shrewsbury in the Third Division South cerca 1955, ground almost empty and a bore draw. Got hooked at the home match against Peterboro, our bitter rivals at that point, in Division Four's last year. Having written the following on the recent "Villa Away" post under Palace Talk, but as I now realise Nostalgia is also catered for on Holmesdale, here it is again. "Saturday January 6th, 1962. FA Cup Third Round, at Villa Park. We were in the Third Division, they were in the top flight. We went ahead at least twice until they drew level at 3x3 nearing the end of play. A replay at Selhurst Park was only a minute away, then their winger crossed the ball over from the left and it floated over legendary goalie Vic Rouse's head into the net (it was a windy day) and we were out. Poor man never played for us again. I was there as a teenage schoolboy. You could have heard a pin drop on the train journey back!" Over 50 years on, and, needless to say, most who were there will have passed on, while the vast majority of posters on here hadn't even been thought of. But I do wonder if there is anyone out there can recall the feelings of first rapture and then despondency of that dark, chilly day.

I am new on here, but am an ardent follower. First Palace match against Shrewsbury in the Third Division South cerca 1955, ground almost empty and a bore draw. Got hooked at the home match against Peterboro, our bitter rivals at that point, in Division Four's last year.
Having written the following on the recent "Villa Away" post under Palace Talk, but as I now realise Nostalgia is also catered for on Holmesdale, here it is again.

"Saturday January 6th, 1962. FA Cup Third Round, at Villa Park. We were in the Third Division, they were in the top flight. We went ahead at least twice until they drew level at 3x3 nearing the end of play. A replay at Selhurst Park was only a minute away, then their winger crossed the ball over from the left and it floated over legendary goalie Vic Rouse's head into the net (it was a windy day) and we were out. Poor man never played for us again. I was there as a teenage schoolboy. You could have heard a pin drop on the train journey back!"
Over 50 years on, and, needless to say, most who were there will have passed on, while the vast majority of posters on here hadn't even been thought of. But I do wonder if there is anyone out there can recall the feelings of first rapture and then despondency of that dark, chilly day.

My father was at that game and often talks about how well Palace played that day and nearly caused a cup shock. Here are his comments. "In reply to the fan commenting on that infamous FA Cup match at Villa Park in 62, yes ,many who attended that match must have passed on. The three fans I went with are no longer with us, my step-dad, his mate and more recently my brother. Over the years, I have spoken to many people and sent numerous letters to the Croydon Advertiser about this game. I can put my hand on heart and honestly say I have never been so choked seeing us lose a game we clearly should have got at least a replay and that includes losing the FA Cup Final. I am aged 80 now and apart from a couple of players, I could still name our team that played so well that day. My father was at that game and often talks about how well Palace played that day and nearly caused a cup shock.

Here are his comments.

Yes remember it well. Used to go to most away games in my early teenage years. The journey home was a quiet affair. Seem to remeber the train breaking down as well. Denis Uphill was for me the MOM. Palace deserved at least a draw

I was there I was 13 and remember Uphill scoring a great goal and how well we played. I thought we lost 3-2 not 4-3.

Division 4's last season was 91/92, and I don't remember Peterborough being bitter rivals at that time. They were rivals in 60/61, their first season in the league. After 5 games we were top of Division 4 and they were second, both having won 4 and drawn 1. Palace had scored 20 goals! They came to Selhurst on Wednesday 7th September 1960, and beat us - I think - 2-0. I still have the programme. I think that was the first time I saw Park Road packed with coaches. Peterborough won the Fourth Division title that season and we were promoted. I had planned to go to the Villa cup-tie with a school pal on the railway special but applied too late. I stayed home but my friend went full fare on a proper train. He said he was pleased to have gone - I'm not sure I would have been. I think that was the match when we played so well that one of the papers called it the Byrne and Allen show, after the fifties American TV comedy series. And Ronnie Allen's first words on leaving the pitch were reputed to have been "I've always hated this place" (he was ex-West Brom). Delday, I think you'll find it was 3-4. By the way, Brazil Nut, I got to Selhurst just before you: 53/54, against Colchester - lost, I'm pretty sure.

By the way I to was at that Peterborough game and I remember that there were well over 40,000 there. Also they had a player named Nelson who was getting a lot of stick from the Palace fans but I can't remember why. I believe he was theier captain and a comical fellow. Were you at the Palace v Slovak Bratislava game? Wow a European team at Selhurst, I think we won either 6-0 or 6-2, do you remember?

I've located the September 1960 Peterborough programme, delday, and have to say that there's nobody called Nelson in their side. Their captain was centre-half Norman Rigby. Yes - I was at the Slovan (not Slovak) Bratislava game (31st January 1962), and have the programme, but no memory at all of the score, or even the result. I was also at the Real Madrid match, staged to celebrate the installation of new floodlights. The programme - amazingly - doesn't show the date of the match, but a clue is provided by the inclusion of a photo of the team that played in the infamous Villa cup-tie. The Real Madrid team included Gento, Puskas and Di Stefano. Final score 2-2, I think.

I've located the September 1960 Peterborough programme, delday, and have to say that there's nobody called Nelson in their side. Their captain was centre-half Norman Rigby. Yes - I was at the Slovan (not Slovak) Bratislava game (31st January 1962), and have the programme, but no memory at all of the score, or even the result. I was also at the Real Madrid match, staged to celebrate the installation of new floodlights. The programme - amazingly - doesn't show the date of the match, but a clue is provided by the inclusion of a photo of the team that played in the infamous Villa cup-tie. The Real Madrid team included Gento, Puskas and Di Stefano. Final score 2-2, I think.

My first Palace game was in the mid 50,s but I can't remember the actual game. I was a regular with my dad begining with the 1957/58 season. We weren't great but we had some characters like Chopper Greenwood. Always had good keepers (we needed them) first one I remember is Ray Potter. Hope to see them in April when I will be in England but will probably be on TV in a pubwhich will be OK as I have no Palace fans near me that I know of.

My first Palace game was in the mid 50,s but I can't remember the actual game. I was a regular with my dad begining with the 1957/58 season. We weren't great but we had some characters like Chopper Greenwood. Always had good keepers (we needed them) first one I remember is Ray Potter. Hope to see them in April when I will be in England but will probably be on TV in a pubwhich will be OK as I have no Palace fans near me that I know of.

Palace had been 4-1 down before giving them a fright in the pouring rain with Terry Long hitting a 35yarder! I watched us nearly match the greatest team in world as a very excited 12 year old! Reference the Peterborough 0-2 at home in the4th div match - I think there were 36000 there which might have been a world record for a 4th level match at the time,

I wanted to go, but it clashed with a Cup Match for the Cubs. My dad and a car full went and I remember them all talking about how well we'd played. I was really disappointed to have missed it, but the consolation was that the Cub team got through and eventually won the trophy and I still have my medal which was presented by Vic Rouse himself.

I wanted to go, but it clashed with a Cup Match for the Cubs. My dad and a car full went and I remember them all talking about how well we'd played.

I was really disappointed to have missed it, but the consolation was that the Cub team got through and eventually won the trophy and I still have my medal which was presented by Vic Rouse himself.
