Why did the practice of chucking bog rolls at a match stop? I remember a friendly between Stoke or Leicester v Palace at Selhurst in the 70's and Gordon Banks was in goal. His goal was covered in bog roll thrown from the Holmesdale Terrace and he started throwing it back. It was such a good feeling if you threw a bog roll that totally unrolled and flew over the crossbar. And wooden rattles.... I made mine at woodwork in school in the 60's and painted it claret and blue. They just seem to die out.

No wonder there were never any bog rolls in the Holmesdale toilets at the back of the grass bank ! I bet a few were inconvenienced after having a bowel movement !

While I think it became a bit out of fashion to throw bog rolls it also started getting a bit dear to do too often. I loved my rattle but those standing near me weren't always that keen. Nowadays they are in the same category as glass bottles flares knives etc and you cannot take them into the ground.

I remember watching a Serie A game on TV just as Italian football was becoming unwatchable. The crowd were chucking stuff at the Juve keeper. He got hit on the head by something quite painful which actually hit him in a way to make him dizzy. However, he stayed on his feet until a toilet roll hit him on the head whereupon he hit the deck. Looked quite comical (although I don't condone what happened) seeing what looked like a toilet roll knocking a big bloke out.

My rattle has long been relegated to the loft along with my Grundig tape recorder, Top of the Pop LPs and various other pieces of junk that I keep trying to convince my wife will become collectable at some point before I die. However I still manage to give the rattle a twirl most times I go up to the loft to deposit more collectable items though.

I used to have a claret and blue scarf and a bobble hat ! I remember some supporters taking transistor radios into the ground and at the end of the match others used to get near to them as they left the ground to listen to the final scores ! Edited by Willo (27 Aug 2013 2.17pm)
