Palace beat Fulham 3-2 to reach the top flight of English Football for the first time in the history of our Club.
2-0 down at half time, goals from Kember, Lazarus and C Jackson, in front of 36.126 clinched victory.

Hopefully the present squad can emulate that this season!

Yes he was, past his best and a little over weight, a shadow of the great player that left us some 7yrs earlier and coming to the end of his playing days, although I believe he enjoyed our moment of glory.

I was panicking at HT though!

Me too - I was right behind the goal at the Holmesdale end and was one of the thousands who ran on the pitch afterwards

Remember it well! Had been to Preston by coach the week before for a goalless draw and had champagne passed round on the way back as we were virtually up!

Remember David Payne on the pitch at Fulham game swigging bubbly from a bottle being passed round.

Like to say I remember it well but was actually playing that day, on the delightful windswept wastes of Purley Way.

lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright.

I remember that game very clearly, particularly our awful start when it seemed everything was going to go horribly wrong. Then, in very un-Palace like fashion it all turned around for us.

As I pointed out in another thread, it is perhaps hard to appreciate now how stunning that promotion was. Until going up to division 2 in 1964 we had spent almost our entire history grubbing around in the lower leagues....and here we were heading for the top flight!

Many years later, in the west of Ireland ,I played cricket with Frank Large, who scored Fulham's 2nd goal that day. I asked him about that match, and he said he remembered it well. But he was certain the final score was 2-2 !
Sadly ,Frank lost out to cancer in 2003

Happy days, I remember being carried 30 yards by the crowd when we scored our third, was standing under the partly built Arfa Waite stand. If I'm right it was "Arfa" as only half the roof was on. H & S won't allow it today!
