I have just seen the sad news that Derek Kevan has died. The younger fans on this site may well say Derek who? He was an ex-England International when he came to Palace from Man City in 1965 having previously been a sharp shooter for WBA (157 goals). Unfortunately his best years were behind him when he came to the Palace. His large build had earned him the nickname "Tank" but at this stage the tank looked a bit overfilled. He scored 5 goals in 21 matches for Palace before moving on to Peterborough. Anyone else remember his brief stint with us?

Dave Sexton was on a different thread for some reason and now Kevan. If they aren't 'Nostalgia' I don't know what is. Having said that it's sad to hear about old Palace players dying but as stated Kevan's best days had well gone when he arrived and he got short shrift from us as he could barely jump off the ground. RIP Derek.

I went to Wembley in 61 to see England v Mexico as Johnny Byrne was going to play. Unfortunately just before KO they announced his place had been taken by Derek Kevan, I was gutted and Johnny wasn't best pleased after the match which England won 8-0, he was dropped by Walter Winterbottom for disciplinary reasons.
........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history..................... |
