Some of You might be interested to hear that Aki announced his retirement in the end of January after winning both league and cup titles with HJK Helsinki last season that ended in October. Fellow HJK player and Finnish legend Jari Litmanen is still pondering whether to play one more season or not. HJK recorded R. Kelly song in celebration of their double and Aki (though not Jari who resides in Estonia) is heavily involved in video. [Link]

Sorry to hear that Aki has retired. I am going over to Finland later in the year and am hoping to catch a HJK game whilst in Helsinki, before jumping on the train to my grandparent's place in Nokia. I hope Jari plays on for another year, it'd be great to see him playing one last time.

Hope You get to see HJK game. If You want to see Aki You should have lunch at the restaurant at Sonera Stadium (HJKs home ground). I have my lunch there quite often and every second time I see Aki there as he is an assistant manager for the stadium.

Isn't it The World's Greatest?

Very funny, was hoping it would be Vibe though. That would be hysterical.

Drake, is it possible to just get tickets on the day of the match? I've only been to one Finnish league match before (Tampere vs FC Inter)* and I got tickets for that months in advance on the internet. I know most of the league games there are sparsely attended, but I'm assuming HJK are the exception to that with their sw***y stadium (I thought it was called the Finnair Stadium for some reason) and double winning team.
I was at the Olympic Stadium last year to see Finland v Sweden, and I understand that HJK's ground is right next door to that right? That'll make it within walking distance from my hotel.
When will Jari make his decision about playing on?

* only one league game, but I also got to go to see Swindon play a pre season game against Nokia when Steve McMahon was Swindon's manager. Despite being in something like the Finnish fifth division, Nokia played Swindon off the park and beat them 2-0 or 2-1 (my memory is rubbish).

You can get ticket from the gate. Only sold out game last season was euro-tie against Schalke 04 (which HJK won and lost the bulk of players to Europe because of that). Hardcore fans are at the south end. Sonera is right beside Olympic stadium. Jari is supposed to make his call by end of March. There is also a rumour that former Palace player Mikael Forssell might return to HJK to revive his career; I don't know if there is any truth in that.

Cheers for all the info Drake. I read something this week saying Litmanen had an operation and is due back from that in March. Does that mean he'd decided to play on, or will he only decide when he sees how he reacts to the operation. Having found a highlights reel of his appearances last season, he certainly looks capable of playing on, since his game is more about picking out passes than pace anyway.

It seems that Jari is recovering fast so there is good chance we may enjoy his talent this season also. Also rumours of Forsell joining HJK this summer are growing as HJK lost their main striker through injury. And yes, Sonera used to be Finnair stadium. Had a nice lunch there last week as both HJK and HIFK (icehockey champions now entering play-offs) were there also. Great food too as the restaurant is owned by one tv-chef.

Sorry to up this. Drake, I can't find any official word on Litmanen's decision yet. He doesn't appear to be on HJKs books yet he hasn't retired or signed for anyone else yet. Is that right? If he's a free agent, is there a chance he may opt to re-sign for HJK now that they have a big game with Celtic lined-up (after their 9-1 aggregate victory over some Iceland bunch in the Euro qualifiers)? I know he's 41 and not exactly required, but it'd be a nice touch if he could get on the pitch (he's still good enough to best Celtic, I'm sure).

Should Palace be watching this 17 year old that's scoring goals for HJK this season? He had a trial at Liverpool already I think?

I really liked Aki,he never said die and had all the guts in the world when it came to tackling as well as moving himself about. I wish we had half a dozen Akis now,it would make a world of difference but I just have to live with and enjoy the memories.
