I have just been to a 40 year reunion in Warlingham and an old friend's name came up in conversation but no one could shed any light on what he's now up to. Does anyone remember or know the whereabouts of an old mate of mine called Keith Walley who played in the Big Mal era. Keith and his family came from Weymouth and lived at the D&J in Thornton Heath. I lost touch with Keith after getting married and starting a family in 1976.

Interesting. He was the only scorer in a 1-1 draw with Millwall in front of a 30k + crowd on 17th November 1973 which would have endeared him to many. He then played only 3 more games before disappearing off the radar. He presumably was suffering from a bad injury as he is not shown transfering to another club.
lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright. |

Not certain,as time, beer and funny fags have taken their toll, but I think he may have gone to Weymouth after us.
Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link] |

Yes the goal against Millwall made him instantly popular with the faithfull especially after a desperate start to the season. Palace were without a win in October so after the game at Swindon where he made the only goal of the game for Alan Whittle to score things looked promising. Shortly after followed a visit to Hull (Boothferry Park - looks a bit neglected now [Link] )where for some reason Big Mal decided to play our talented new right sided attacking mid-fielder at left back? This apparantly followed a late warm-up injury (Paddy Mulligan)and caused a re-shuffle. Hull's legendary right wing Ken Wagstaffe had a field day and scored 3 in no time and Big Mal not only blamed Keith for the defeat, he told him 'you'll never play for Palace again', He never did! I watched him at Tonbridge and then he spent time in Durban with Andy McBride. Keith was also mates with Ian Britton and Gary Stanley who were then at Chelsea and had a girlfriend called Val Smith from Penge. Sadly I can't trace him hence my post.

Can't add anything more only to say his surname was spelt WHALLEY and I'm sure he was the son of our former relief manager ERNIE WHALLEY. Big Mal got rid of him after a few games and I think he went out of the professional game.

Hi starks park, sorry but I can honestly assure you Keith's name was spelt Walley. I have it on the 21st birthday card he sent me in his own writing. Ernie Whalley was one of the coaching staff and absolutely no relation. Everybody used to ask them both just that and they would point out the different spellings. See the team photo with both shown at [Link] Keith was a really good mate which is how I know what happened in the '70's but I am trying to find where he is now and sadly no one seems to know. Thanks for trying to help anyway.

Funny how some things involving the Palace are incorrectly stored in the brain and only come to light some 40 years later. I wish you luck in finding an old mate, try 192.com if he's on the phone and is registered in the book, you might be able to narrow it down to certain parts of the UK.
