I'm Jack Hayward's grandaughter. He played for Palace in 1933/34. I'm attaching a programme of a first practice match, i won on ebay (so proud,) with his name and penciled comments regarding performances. This is a link to his performances against Swindon Town FC [Link] If anyone has any more info on the 1933/34 team i would love to hear a reply Attachment: jack hayward 2 001.jpg (1,785.49Kb)

Nice one. Do you have a pic of him that you could scan in as a player?

In the 'Palace complete record 1905-1989', they've mispelt your grandad as Jack Haywood. Anyway, from your info it is definitely meant to be him. Their records state: Born: Warsop Vale October 1903 Signed for Palace on 10 June 1933 from Bournemouth Left June 1934 but doesn't say who to. Played 19 games for Palace wearing the No.2 shirt Scored 1 goal (the winner I think) at home to Clapton in a 3-2 victory on 28th Oct 1933 Palace finished 12th in Division 3 South the year he played He also made one FA Cup apperance for Palace, helping us beat Aldershot 1-0 at Selhurst that set up a massive 4th Round tie against League Champions and the team of the 30's, Arsenal at Highbury. Unfortunately your grandad didn't play in that game (injured perhaps? as he only seemed to appear once more for us after that game). Palace lost to Arsenal 7-0 in front of the largest crowd to date ever to have watched a Palace match: 56,177.

That is excellent. The admission fee for the game (7d) seems high for 1933.

What a fascinating bit of memorabilia with interesting comments. Amazingly whoever wrote them didn't seem to rate Peter Simpson, arguably Palace's greatest ever player and best goalscorer. They don't appear to include him in their best team either. 14 days later Simpson scored 2 goals in the opening game against Southend and in successive matches v Bristol Rovers and Coventry finishing the season with 20 goals in 25 games. Frank Manders who at times replaced Simpson was rated "excellent" only managed 5 goals in 23 games. Simpson did suffer with knee problems I believe which eventually ended his career so he may not have felt that he had much to prove in the first practice match, particularly as he had scored 14 goals in 20 games the previous season to Manders' 10 in 25.

So who is the goalkeeper on the front cover of the programme? Good question! I can only go back as far as Ray Potter. Problem is he may not even have been a Palace 'keeper.

So who is the goalkeeper on the front cover of the programme? Just a thought. Could it have been Billy Callender who, in July 1932 at the age of 26, hung himself in the dressing room following the death of his fiancee? If you look at the hairline it is very similar to the one in the complete record 1905-1989.
