All this talk of 'bringing Paddy up to speed and then give him the job' is just romantic bulls***. Would these people be saying the same about say Seamus Coleman if he'd retired and was on our coaching staff? Someone who had a decent playing career yet zero affiliation with Palace? With the current coaching credentials and achievements of Mcarthy? Of course not.
Established professionally run Premiership clubs do NOT risk their 100m+ annual income on a novice because the fans like him and he used to play for the club. Its actually quite naive and childish.
I like Paddy and I also hope he one day makes a great manager. If we want to avoid creating a smaller scale Frank Lampard situation we use heads not hearts. We go for someone that at least has the track record to succeed. Let Paddy go off to the lower leagues or abroad to coach and get some experience. Hell, I'd even be happy for Parish to enter a handshake agreement with him that IF he proves himself when the job becomes available down the road we'll look at it but talking about a guy who has zero experience of even EFL football management let alone EPL management is just truly ridiculous and embarrassing.

I wholeheartedly concur with these sentiments.

As do I.

I am still very fond of Paddy, would be overjoyed to see him succeed and therefore would love nothing more than that to happen with Palace.

There's a real disparity between a hypothetical, Hollywood-esque feel good story and the reality or likelihood of this happening however.

Until such time there is compelling, solid evidence for it I'd rather we make far more informed decisions that have such a huge impact upon our fortunes both on and off the pitch.

And me! I want to see Paddy go out to a lower league club and start learning the ropes with all the knocks that will bring. He may prove to be a good manager in which case at an appropriate time we can welcome him back if he still wants the Palace job. Meanwhile I'd be looking for a proven PL manager who needs to show he isn't past it such as Moyes or Rodgers (Like others, it wouldn't surprise me if Rodgers goes to West Ham (who will have some money for him to spend once they've sold Rice) and we ned up with Moyes. That wouldn't be the end of the world. After all, he took Everton on several European journeys as well as West Ham on a couple. Yes I know it didn't work out for him at Man U or in Spain but then Hodgson didn't hack it at Liverpool or Inter second time round as I recall.

Paddy: The Movie, Starring Elijah Wood as Paddy, and Viggo Mortensen as Steve, an incredible rags to European glory riches saga coming to the big screen soon!

I think in today's day and age Paddy would be played by Idris Elba, Steve would be played by Lizzo and Sam Smith would play a turnstile.

So do I but that is not what is being touted. People are suggesting that R + R will stay another year and mentor Paddy through. They will assess him. If he is up to it there will be a smooth handover. If not we look elsewhere.

This of course assumes R + R manage to stay the course themselves. ..

Spot on.

The only argument in favour of the appointment would be that either Mccarthy has, behind the scenes, shown himself to be exactly what the club are looking for in the next manager and/or a generational coaching genius, that he knows the club's young players inside out, and that we have a one-off, stunningly gifted set of youngsters in the reserves we expect him to bring through. That happened with Pep when he was coaching Barcelona B team apparently.

Basically, Paddy can have the job done if he's the Croydon Guardiola!

But I think the counter point is that no mater how well he does behind the scene, it would be madness to give someone with zero experience one of the biggest jobs (comparatively) in the game

(But not completely unheard of)

Whether it's a young coach learning from an older manager before slipping into his shoes, the outgoing manager nominating his own successor, or the former assistant manager stepping up to replace the outgoing manager, there really aren't many examples of the 'handover' method working well, and many examples of it failing.

I'm not saying we should rule out an inhouse candidate, but I don't think any amount of transition preparation will do much to offset the lack of experience of being a top-flight No1 that Paddy would have to overcome.

Which is the crap idea I've been saying is ridiculous. Mentor him? Really?
You cannot replicate real conditions when taking a penalty in practice. Likewise in management. Paddy must go and manage to learn. Not be 'mentored'. What kind of new age rubbish is this.
Lampard is adored by Chelsea fans. Did Chelsea keep him on staff and give him the job? No. They let him go to Derby to see how he coped.
The entire city of Liverpool has love and admiration for Steven Gerrard. Did they mentor him for the managers job? Of course not. They let him go to Rangers and then Villa with the hope that he'll prove himself and go back and get the job down the road. Sensible business and football people are in the results business. You dont get results with sentiment. Even your favourites must prove themselves if you want to be successful.
