A report in June before the latest flare up. Remember Hamas don't control The West Bank.
Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza face restrictions to their daily movement, including: A 26-foot-high Separation Barrier running through the West Bank in contravention of international law as found by the International Court of Justice,[1] separating Palestinians from their families and land, as well as their workplaces, schools and healthcare facilities.[2] Further barriers exist to separate Gaza from Israel and Gaza from Egypt. (For the avoidance of doubt, these barriers were not included in the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice on the Separation Barrier in the West Bank. There is no allegation that the routes of the Gaza barriers similarly violate international law, although the administration of their crossing points are extremely troubling from a freedom of movement perspective.) Restricted access to Israel and the Jordan Valley (and therefore the opportunity to travel internationally) – the Israeli army monitors all points of exit from the West Bank and Gaza (except for the Rafah Crossing from Gaza into Egypt which is administered by Egypt). Palestinians can only use a select few crossings, which are consequently extremely congested. Over 500 Israeli checkpoints and physical road obstructions which hinder movement on a daily basis, subjecting Palestinians to humiliating searches and severe delays,[3] and Approximately 150 illegal settlements on Palestinian land, making 43% of the West Bank inaccessible to locals.[4] Other measures in frequent use include temporary (and therefore unpredictable) road blocks, curfews and a dual road system. B’Tselem reports that in February 2014, over 65 kilometres of roads in the West Bank were off-limits to Palestinians, reserved almost exclusively for the use of Israelis living in illegal settlements.[5] The dual road system serves not only to segregate Israelis from Palestinians but also to increase delays for Palestinians on a daily basis, as they are forced to use alternative, longer routes. In employing the measures above, Israel is violating their obligations under international law by denying Palestinians the basic human right to freedom of movement." LPHR.Org.

There are some legitimate complaints about the route of the barrier.....But despite the claims of many people before it went up....It has bought down the number of suicide bombings in Israel significantly. Those who argue against a barrier being there are arguing for increased death on the Israeli mainland.

Here's a surprise - Gaza has $4bn worth of gas deposits under it, and Israel faces an energy crisis. Surely there's no connection between these facts...is there? Would Israel really launch a massacre of innocent civilians, under the guise of destroying Hamas, merely to secure its energy supplies? You decide....

The arguments on this thread are a pretty good indicator of why peace in the Middle East is so difficult to attain. Very little subtlety

First of all, Israel said they were attacking Gaza because Hamas was involved in murdering three boys from the (illegal) settlements in the west Bank. This was despite the fact that they have shown no evidence for it and that the major Palestinian group in the West Bank is Fatah. Then they said they had to carry on bombing and rocketing Gaza because some rockets were being fired into Israel in protest at the arrests in defiance of the agreement which had been made. Then they said they had to carry on bombing because of "terror tunnels". although there was no indication they had been used before Israel started this latest war. Then they said they had to carry on bombing because Hamas had captured one of their soldiers (although they themselves had captured thousands of Palestinians over the last few years and said any action in response was terrorism). Obama and Cameron came on the tele and said how disgraceful it was that the soldier had been captured (even though all they had got to go on was Israel had said it had happened and Hamas said it had not). Then they admitted that the soldier wasn't captured at all but had been killed in action, as Hamas had said all along. Did they say sorry to all the people they had killed on the basis of a lie on their part? Did Obama and Cameron apologise to the Palestians? No, and no. All that has happened is that Israel has bombed yet another school with thousands of refugees in it again today (that is after several other similar events, including bombing hospitals). The only solution is for the blockade and the occupation to end. Otherwise this conflict will continue because it is based on people fighting huge injustice, and nobody will be able to convince them they should just be quiet and let Israel carry on their exploitation (including their natural resourses as the previous poster said).
