I disagree with you about the masks, but it's not just masks, it's the social distancing, hygiene, fresh air supply etc. We need to work together as a society to minimise the risk. This requires both leadership and a willingness to be led, whether you agree with the science or not.

You don't fight battles with an army without a battle plan, a supreme commander and generals. You cannot have the troops just deciding for themselves whether they will fight or what weapons they will use. You may disagree with the strategy, the fighting man often does, but the battle will surely be lost if the plan isn't followed.

We don't yet know the full implications of this mutation, which appears to potentially carry more risks than others, but we all need to co-operate with whatever is demanded of us, even if we disagree. That's the responsibility that being part of a society places upon us.

You can disagree but it doesn't change the fact you are wrong.

Life is a risk we have gone way overboard this has a 99% recovery rate.

If people are so worried sort out your health and encourage others to do so as well.

Mutations and variants are not the same thing if you do not understand this basic concept by the message you posted you do not you shouldn't be talking about this subject.

The new "variant" is being overplayed like this whole thing has been.

You keep spreading this dangerous nonsense about them not working when there’s lots of studies out there to show that they slow down transmission rates.

[Link] (contains actual statistical data though and we know that you struggle with that).

You just don’t like the minor inconvenience of it and being told what to do because you’re a massive whiny man baby.

They do not only the proper ppe does this is a fact proven by science which has been conducted for decades before covid BS.

You post a link to material you have clearly not even read or understand.

A few quotes from that link

"There are currently no studies that measure the impact of any kind of mask on the amount of infectious SARS-CoV-2 particles from human actions"

"Overall, direct evidence of the efficacy of mask use is supportive, but inconclusive. Since there are no RCTs, only one observational trial, and unclear evidence from other respiratory illnesses, we will need to look at a wider body of evidence"

It is all Epidemiological Evidence complete waste of time.

That is a very arrogant response. We can disagree, as others do, but my point is that whilst there are two strands of thought on the use of face masks they have a part to play in getting people on board with the need to take precautions.

My own opinion is that anything which limits the amount of virus in the air must have an impact, whether that is a mask, or changing the air.

The idea that we have gone overboard just because we have had a 99% recovery rate is often trotted out by those who seek to resist the need to participate in the effort demanded of us. The real question is what would have happened if we had not collectively made that effort? The scientifically based forecasts were dire. I believe the scientists, much more than barrack-room experts.

Of course, life is a risk, but you take steps to avoid those risks you can avoid. You don't walk in front of traffic just because you can.

Being pedantic over terminology isn't contributing anything, especially when the correct word is actually "strain".

My wife works in our local hospital. I suggest you try telling her this is being "overplayed"! When I picked her up from a 12 hour shift in A & E last night, there were around 40 ambulances waiting to offload. They are scared sh*tless of another major surge. We absolutely need to be very cautious and ALL of us play our part, irrespective of any "I know better" proclivities.

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

As a good rule of thumb, if you are in doubt over an issue, see what Wisbech's view of it is and take the opposite view and you won't go far wrong.

First 13 cases of Omicron in Portugal identified, all in the football team B SAD - [Link]

"Thirteen cases of the Ómicron variant have been identified in Portugal, the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) announced this Monday, adding that the 13 positive samples are "associated with cases of infection of Belenenses SAD players, since one of the positive cases had a recent trip to South Africa.

"Preliminary tests carried out at INSA strongly suggest that all 13 cases associated with Belenenses SAD players are related to the Ómicron variant of concern," reads the INSA statement sent to the press."

This certainly seems to speak to the variant being very transmissible being that all cases are in one team.

and apparently "two or three players and two or three staff have symptoms, but nothing too serious, the rest are asymptomatic."

No doubt too early to tell how it impacts other age groups. It is looks like whatever is going to happen, is inevitable and could occur on an accelerated timescale to all that has come before.

When the precautionary approach (masks, hand-washing, social distancing) takes such little effort on the part of individual, and has made such a big difference already in mitigating the earlier spreads, then you have to ask why these measures were dumped so quickly. ? Only to be re-instated. But not on the Monday,...but wait until Tuesday.
With that kind of logic, no wonder the public get disaffected.

To assist you in getting an answer to your “real question” WE, I suggest that you look at both Sweden and Florida to see what happens in societies with very limited restrictions…

When did masks mitigate previous spreads? How’s it gone in Scotland and Wales? And they weren’t dumped so quickly anyway. Funnily enough the people in charge all got on board after telling us there’s no point and they don’t achieve anything.

You can only have social distancing if you close or reduce numbers allowed in venues, in the lead up to Christmas, again. Good luck there.

If people are really that worried then perhaps wearing a proper mask and social distancing will mean they have nothing to fear. Apparently it’s easy.

I spoke to my GP friend last night she is not happy and stressed out with some of her patients.

Patients who are not vaccinated and say they have COVID symptoms demand a face to face appointment. When they turn up they refuse to wear a mask* so putting the doctor and others at risk they then refuse to take a lateral flow or PCR test to confirm they have COVID because they don't believe in it and sticking a bud up your nose is invasive.

These idiots don't believe in COVID or being vaccinated and yet they want to be treated without being properly examined.

I feel for my friend and anyone in the NHS who has to put up with this rubbish.

Lucky for them my friend is a lot more courteous than I am as I would as I would refuse to treat them.

*If you coughing and sneezing what is the big deal about wearing a mask for a few minutes whilst allowing someone to examine you whether its COVID a cold or the flu you are spreading your germs around. As my friend says she sees extremely vulnerable people and could pass whatever it is on.

I presume you mask up at the supermarket. Next time you go have a walk down the toiletries aisle. You can still smell the products clearly, mask or no mask. This is how effective a mask is at preventing small particles getting into your system. As for keeping small particles in, maybe if you are coughing it helps projectile particles but otherwise it’s just coming out the sides, top and bottom so still gets into the air.

I am not an anti-vaxxer, anti-mask wearer or take COVID lightly however this notion that putting a paper mask on all of a sudden makes the world a safer place is frankly ludicrous.

Enforcing mask wearing is another element of the government exerting control over the public, which in my mind is a more worrying trend than the actual safety impact of mask wearing. If it makes some feel better to wear one then fine, carry on but it should not be enforced.

We have to be talking of the smallest of small minorities here surely Badger. I respect people’s opinions as to whether to be vaccinated or not but I do agree that if they are insisting on a face to face appointment with a health professional then showing an element of respect for the person seeing them should be top of the list of priorities

All the early evidence points to mass transmission but low health impact. Which would be ideal. Will have to wait another week or two but better to slow down it's uptake by implementing some measures until more is known, then if it does turn out to be almost exclusively mild or no symptoms then open everything back up.

My hunch is it won't cause significant hospitalisation / death this time around but lets see. The other interesting outcome of this is the potential elimination of the more 'dangerous' strains. So it could work out win win

Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons.
