Quite possibly. I suspect the Dutch will investigate, if it was only a couple of passengers who infected the rest on the plane that is rather worrying for anyone who has booked flights.

The new strain-the Omicrom variant- does not appear to be affected by the double jabbed, so I imagine we will be up for an omicrom jab at some point! Lets hope they test it first, its not a race to get a sub standard vaccine out! Masks compulsory in shops again. One last thing, the anagram of Omicron is Moronic-who knew? I don't believe there is any need to worry. It would be tested but won't need huge trials again as the modifications needed would be tweaks, and not comprehensive changes. I have read it could be ready in 100 days time. Which seems a long time to me, so if it does get a hold, I guess we will be under restrictions again. The bigger danger is, I think, the growing resistance to any kind of restrictions, along with the anti-vax movement gaining additional ammunition from a "rushed" roll out. The number of people I see now refusing to wear masks in crowded places, observe social distancing and basic hygiene procedures, has increased markedly recently. Some are just being bloody minded or selfish, whilst others just fed up with it all. Dangerous, though, whatever the reasons.

2 steps backward, however if this strain is as bad as they say it... The new restrictions don't bother me I have continued to wear a mask in shops and on public transport. What is worrying is how come 60+ passengers on the flight to Amsterdam had COVID after taking a PCR test in SA. A PCR test is not 100% but that number of infected passengers suggest more than the usual margin of error. Were they genuinely tested? You hear stories of fake test results. Anyway having had 4 holidays on the trot cancelled by the tour operator I am in no rush to book again until we see how this plays out. Yeah, nobody knows. I’m curious to see what the response will be in a month’s time if it’s not bad at all. I have been saying that something will come along to throw a spanner in the works for Christmas/winter/the economy/life/progress out of this, and here it is. A variant nobody knows anything about. I get that governments have to respond in case it is bad, but like I say, what if it isn’t…?

If the figures are correct over half the population of the UK had been vaccinated and It looks like the other half had been infected so no issue at all. (This again may hit poor health group or people who have unknown medical conditions the rest should be fine) Now I know you will try to counter this with we have been told the vaccine doesn't protect again this is BS if the vaccine works as it should of even if it is for the other variants it will still offer a % of protection the people who have been infected will have natural protection at a higher rate. This is again trying to scare people and force changes to policies which has been the case since day 1. Masks do not work why do people keep repeating about people not wearing them this was proven by real science for decades before this virus came along. I do laugh how people also fall for the it's only in this country this is the place it comes from the media spreads this its not true variants are created all over the world it doesn't start in one place and travel you can have outbreaks in every city at the same time this is another reason lock downs and closing boarders is a waste of time for variants.

If this spreads fast it could cause issues, but the significant amount of previous infections in addition to massive vaccination should in theory should help us fend off worst case scenarios, whereas prior to covids appearance we had very little if any natural protection against it. Certainly there are possibly concerning scenarios, such as that of antibodies recognising aspects of a previous version and attempting to fight 'that' rather that what the new infection actually is (allowing it is cause more damage), but hopefully that won't pan out' Being that it's already in the country, we're living through a story already told and no matter what the government put in place it will rip its way through society if its more transmissible than Delta. We just have to hope that it isn't more harmful. People are exhausted by lockdowns and the economy can't keep taking hits. Beyond a point we have to make our own sensible choices now. I'm not convinced that people will adhere to restictions that are beyond minimal (sensible wearing of masks, travel testing etc).. and really I'm not convinced at this point that they should. But of course in two or three weeks time we're likely to know a lot more. If it's something marginally worse who cares, and if somehow it's a complete horror story we'll no doubt be plunged back into a hellish situation no matter our own personal take.

i think Bluejay is on track. We all know what we should be doing at minimal level (social distancing, washing hands, masks), but even in Wales where restrictions have continued, you see more and more people every day not doing the basics.

The state uses masks as a form of compliance using visual conformity....it all comes from their behavioural science wing and has little to do with actually reducing infection risk....even the best masks require training to use properly and it can be noted that they aren't bothered about ensuring that people only use them. Personally I find mask mandates an insult on several levels but moving beyond that I'd agree that we will need time to understand just how serious this new 'variant' is.

I disagree with you about the masks, but it's not just masks, it's the social distancing, hygiene, fresh air supply etc. We need to work together as a society to minimise the risk. This requires both leadership and a willingness to be led, whether you agree with the science or not. You don't fight battles with an army without a battle plan, a supreme commander and generals. You cannot have the troops just deciding for themselves whether they will fight or what weapons they will use. You may disagree with the strategy, the fighting man often does, but the battle will surely be lost if the plan isn't followed. We don't yet know the full implications of this mutation, which appears to potentially carry more risks than others, but we all need to co-operate with whatever is demanded of us, even if we disagree. That's the responsibility that being part of a society places upon us.

That's the responsibility that being part of a society places upon us. The sheer stupidity of the public never ceases to amaze. but then I look at our 'leaders' and I can see lots of similarities. Whilst most virologists would back a basic stance on masks, distancing and cleaning, and you can legislate to a degree. What you can't do is force people to have a substance put into their body. that is one of the costs of a free society or stuff which may inhibit liberties. And if you think your leadership is clueless ? You make your own informed decision. And when I say 'informed decision', of course that is subjective on the source of information and the intelligence of the readership. The Government are making an absolute pigs @r5e of things at the moment. A Prime Minister who won't work weekends and a Home Secretary who is shunned by neighbouring countries.
