The narrative will still be that they "did all they could" In any sort of functioning government, a report this damning would result in sackings - this will probably lead to an improvement in Tory polling.
Just wondering if you prefer the New Zealand and Australia approach?

They also said that Wales did and it made no difference. Of course the government has to carry the blame however it is clear that there were many fingers in that pie and not just politicians. Public health England was shown up to be an expensive waste of money and not up to the job. I presume that a new body will be created. As for the PPE scandal I hope there will be a separate investigation to see who got the contacts and why. Yes, I must say, due to the unique nature of the problem we were dealing with it's very easy to criticise the government. Realistically every nation was winging it, and the outcome was always going to look very negative when compared to the status quo whatever approach was taken so I have a degree of sympathy for their position. There are so many variables at play, that anyone who feels they know better, likely doesn't. Economically even, for all intents and purposes it's a matter of a few degrees this way and that with regard to outcome as it is an inescapable global issue, not a local one.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Conservatives early covid response was a failure.' by becky Not my words, but an MPS report, including CONS! This was one of the worst ever public health failures! The failure of locking down immediately, and a week after our EU counterparts, cost thousands of lives! Bungle told us in week one to go down the pub, have covid parties and mix, go to Cheltenham, then a week later to stay in or you will be fined and do not mix! This cost thousands of lives, then putting covid positive people in to care homes with the most vulnearble added to the 44000 people passing away who had tested positive of covid! Add the £14 billion of PPE money carved up among the CONservative cabinet and their friends-one of bungles lady friends turned her dog food business in to a million pound dog food and ppe business overnight! The vaccine was rushed out, so we could beat those rascals in the EU, only for it to be deemed inferior by our own people and can"t be used on under 16"s, the Belgian vaccine is better and has proved so in most of the EU, who have overtaken us in the rollout! On LBC this morning, a CONservative cabinet minister was asked by Nick Ferrari, a big CONservative himself, if the minister wanted to apologise in the absense of the PM on a much deserved holiday-(its 6 weeks since his last)-he was asked 5 or 6 times if he wanted to apologise and refused each time, saying nothing to apologise for! Sone bloke just called LBC and said "dont blame boris, he"s just a silly sausage"! I beg to differ!

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Conservatives early covid response was a failure.' by becky It was a whole new and unprecedented situation. Any government, especially a relatively new one, would have struggled to manage it in a way that was more successful so give them some slack. However, their biggest mistake early on, was to keep our borders open for so long. Allowed a lot of infections into the country. They've offered a public enquiry but that seems an unnecessary expense and use of time in light of this latest report.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Edited by Orange1290 (12 Oct 2021 11.56am) I've been all over Europe recently, have family in Denmark and France. Denmark have had the same approach as UK. Frankly, France was far more draconian, yet completely ineffective, at dealing with any part of it. Of course, the Germans project they did great, yet look at how their statistics are compiled and the truth becomes further muddied. I can't speak for every country, yet Ireland's response could easily be labelled as a joke. The UK seems relatively average in it's response from what I've seen.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Conservatives early covid response was a failure.' by becky We actually have Macron to thank as he threatened to close their borders until Johnson got a grip. It seemed to have moved him from complete denial like Trump to vague acknowledgement, it was an interruption to his post-brexit dreams he just didn't get that it was real. You would always give an administration some slack in such an event I guess, but of course in doing so the s***e can truly hit the fan, as happened here.
