Is it worth bothering to point out that The EU and policy related to the breaking down of national identity is all in keeping with Stalin's vision of the future? The men that pull the strings now might not be communists but their goals are the same.

This is exactly the attitude of Brits since Cromwell in Ireland. The Irish border issue is not one we can just brush under the carpet or wash our hands of. It's incumbent on Brexiters to come up with a workable solution or to accept one of the EU's. No it’s not. It is the responsibility of the Irish and the British to come up with a solution, just as we did in the ‘90s, with minimal to no assistance from the EU. The EU is using classic ‘divide and conquer’ tactics with the Irish border and you know it. Lashing out at ‘Brexiteers’ is a reflex from you and your sort.

To be fair to the EU, in the wider political arena, the Irish border issue is fair game and in Varadkar, they have the perfect stooge. I am also convinced that May is using the issue to effectively try to lumber us with the softest of Brexits possible. That is the more serious issue here. There are perfectly viable, tech based systems in place that could be used to solve the border issue. How the German/Swiss border operates in terms of customs is a good starting point and throw in that the common travel area between the Irish Republic and the UK is already established, it is primarily an issue of paper work rather than mile after mile of barbed wire fencing. But the reality is if Britain catches a Brexit cold from no deal, Ireland is threatened with full blown influenza. The UK is vastly stronger and with an infrastructure in place that puts whatever the Irish have to shame. Effectively Ireland needs us for a whole variety of reasons if it is to continue its recovery from the 2008 debacle. And given how Irish politicians stiffed their own population in a way that makes whatever Cromwell and co might have done fade into insignificance then all my sympathies are with the Irish citizens rather than the corrupt fat cats who, in 90% of cases, masquerade as Irish politicians. If you think UK politics is sleazy, then dig a little bit below the surface of what has gone in Irish politics over the last 25 years and you are in for a real treat. Pure Banana Republic shenanigans. Also once the UK leave, the EU is going to turn on Ireland for a whole variety of reasons, not least its corporation tax arrangements. The UK has been at the forefront of protecting Dublin from that for decades but now, that particular chicken is coming home to roost. Varadkar is a vain-glorious man and I am confident that history will not judge him well.

Ireland doesn't need the UK that much. We have a free trade deal with 500 million people, we'll be grand.
