When one has played most of the season and only netted a paltry 2 goals ones confidence in front of goal is hardly on a high and this showed in his pathetic efforts which went wide.If Jermain Defoe had been in those positions it would have probably been a totally different outcome. But Benteke did flick on the ball to Zaha which led to the penalty. As someone has said, with our lack of options Hodgson had no option but to select Benteke.

I will never try an defend Benteke when it comes down to his shocking goals tally and glaring misses week in week out, but one thing is for certain he is the only striker we have.

Soerloth when fit hasnt a prayer of being our main striker.

Benteke may not score 1 more goal between now and the end of the season but he will start every game and if we are going to stay up we need him on the pitch.

Agreed,he would have been dropped weeks ago but no other options.Baffles me why we can’t produce our own soloth type players as there must be loads in lower leagues that we can take punts on .

Totally agree.

Also, Van Dyck had Benteke in his pocket yesterday - even drawing a daft yellow card from him. Holland definitely beat Belgium.

Does anyone know when Sorloth is supposed to be fit?

Like most Palace fans I have no confidence in Benteke at all when it comes to taking chances! The most frustrating thing yesterday was that he did not even force the keeper into making a save from his two chances. Neither went anywhere near the target!

For me I genuinely don’t think Roy rates him at all but has absolutely no other option. We started the season with just one recognised striker and 8 months later only have Sørloth as a back up.

Roy I feel is doing his best with Benteke to build his confidence. What good would it do at this crucial point of the season in coming out and crucifying him.

As in the goalkeeper situation this season Roy has his hands tied due to poor depth of squad.

Curly eagles dad, 45 years of Palace. Never ever a dull moment, Oh Happy Days

Hodgson will never "Crucify" him in public and will be diplomatic if questions are steered in that direction.

As for poor depth of squad, it was hardly improved with the signings of Jach and Rakip !

So once again, all Parish's fault.

No one can argue with the fact that Benteke is poor in front of goal. He kicks or heads the ball in whatever direction he faces. His hold up play is not great either. He is clumsy with the ball at his feet which again doesn’t say much for him as a striker. He is a big lad so likely to win balls in the air but he is more cart horse than race horse. He heads the ball in the direction he is facing and his flick ons similarly go wherever it’s easiest. Yesterday Zaha anticipated correctly on that one occasion but most other flick ons went nowhere in particular. Don’t think it’s lack of confidence so much as lack of ability.

Lack of ability??

In that case, who is to blame for signing him for a record, reported fee of £32m???

Martinez is on Goals on Sunday and has just said Benteke had a good game yesterday and would score those chances 9 times out of 10! Apparently we haven’t created enough this season but he will score goals before the end. Happy days!

We have scored in 11 of our last 13 games. Benteke has only scored 1 of these goals and he is our main striker whose fee was £27 Mill risig to £32 Mill. And I note Martinez has not selected him for the Belgium squad !
