Agree. Even if it looks as though the Astra Zeneca vaccine doesn’t protect against the South African variant [Link] and the Pfizer 2nd dose does [Link] There has to come a point where this stops, or it just continues for reason after reason and it never ends. The problem is that nobody in power wants to take the blame when that point has to come, unless of course we want this to continue indefinitely.

Article written in July. Is there not a possibility funding “issues” may have changed since then?

Yes but the funding was there until the UK left the EU in December 2020. The AZ vaccine development was joint funded with the European Commission unlike some here commenting it was a solely UK funded product. The vaccine development started very early in 2020 and was being tested by autumn 2020, all well within the EC funding period.

Not sure many have stated it was solely funded by the U.K. I am sure the Institute will continue to be funded and find other donors, especially after the success with this vaccine. The EU, despite what some may think, is not the be all and end all. Having received my vaccine, earlier than I would have if we were still in the EU, I am so pleased we left

Yes but one of the reasons you received it is because part of the funding for its development was from the EC.

According to this it was mainly funded by the UK taxpayer

But not solely funded by the UK which is what cryst insinuated by stating:

"It is a tad ironic that british money funded the R and D which without we would all be fecked."

It's actually a 'tad ironic' that the EC funded part of the r&d of the AZ vaccine that people like cryst are taking while they slate the EU while doing so. Quite ironic.

I think the way the EU have conducted themselves over the whole COVID vaccine rollout, has been an absolute disgrace, so deserve to be slated.

Up to a couple of months ago the UK has invested more money in vaccine research development and production than the whole of the EU put together. Quite disgraceful how little they had spent and then demand that they be at the head of the queue.

There are millions of AZ vaccines in the EU not yet used due to scaremongering by the politicians and their continued feeble attempts to organize themselves.
They are demanding more when they can't use what they already have!
I read an article about AZ today - can't find it at the moment- which said that our contract with AZ is very specific and with penalties attached whereas the EU one is very loose.
They have shot themselves in the foot and won't admit it.
Pathetic.

The reason our contract was so specific was that we gave AZ the money to develop the vaccine. It could have failed and we would have been out of pocket so as we were the first to pay for something that didn't exist outside of a laboratory test and might fail in the trials I think that is fair enough.
