You are neglecting here the many times the UK parliament found it self at odds with the EU. Now, it's a negotiation and not a rule. Or we have world trade rules and take on the EU as a competitor. If it's not a fair negotiation it's going to be a hard Brexit and that's what May has been threatening the EU all along....that they are going to get Johnson if it doesn't work out. At the moment I think we will get Johnson and a hard Brexit......It's a game of blink first....We shall see. Edited by Stirlingsays (11 Jan 2018 6.18pm)

I have prepared one of my own time capsules. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like. |

As much as I am sceptical that the government will deliver a clean Brexit, one where we are completely free of Brussels and ECJ interference in our affairs, they have stated that we are leaving the EU, the Customs Union and the Single Market. That is a lot clearer than Labour, whom know they are caught between a rock and hard place. Most Labour supporters & MP’s are Remainers, yet Corbyn knows that his nationalisation programme is contrary to EU law. Therefore we have an arch Remainer nominally in charge of their Brexit Policy in Kier Starmer but he is effectively a eunuch with no power, as Corbyn is being deliberately vague. Straight talking politics, it ain’t.

Straight talking politics, it ain’t. To be honest more concerned with those in power and making the decisions. We have a REMAINER PM in charge of a Brexit Government propped up by the DUP despite the fact the majority in Ulster were opposed to Brexit. The PM has always said that she wants a frictionless border and to uphold the Good Friday agreement. However a frictionless border requires either that the UK stays in the customs union, which the PM has rejected, or that Northern Ireland stays in it while mainland Britain leaves, which the DUP won’t allow. The Government doesn't seem to have any clear strategy and as you said you're sceptical that they will deliver the Brexit you want. Edited by Oliver (17 Jan 2018 9.49am)

Edited by Oliver (17 Jan 2018 9.49am) The only part I disagree with you on is the NI border. There are plenty of open borders around the world, where countries co-exist, in terms of security and trade. What is required is compromise. The customs issue can be flexible on both sides, as can security and with technology, an effective system can be implemented. What will complicate matters is good, old fashioned pig headed ness. Both the EU and the UK can be flexible, whether there is the political desire to do so remains to be seen.

Hard to see how a frictionless border is feasible in NI as the effective border would then be between Britain and the isle of Ireland - the DUP is unlikely to support that.

So much for taking back control of our borders

It will be impossible to have a border in Ireland. There are 500 roads and large parts of the border region are lawless. There is no UK or Irish presence in South Armagh.
