Comparatively we probably were. However, that's subjective. I don't believe there is an objective way of looking at it. If you panned out you could say that undeveloped societies are always going to be exploited by more developed ones, because elites always want more power. The Romans did that in Britain but ultimately it gave Britain several technological advances....as Monty Python correctly summarized. The same happened to Africa....though I won't deny bad things happened...especially by the Belgians. Sure I probably have rose tinted glasses or maybe you have cracked ones. It depends on who is looking at us and what their perspective is. Edited by Stirlingsays (25 May 2021 10.53pm) ...or indeed the Germans. They colonized one tiny corner of the Continent and still couldn't help committing genocide; and that was when it was less fashionable to do so.

I agree with you say - pure equality of opportunity is impossible but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try and reduce any obvious barriers based on prejudices rather than ability. When you say "we" should try to reduce barriers to equal opportunity, do you mean the government? Presumably you would like to private education to be abolished, but what else can the state do to equalise opportunity?

So should I infer from your silence, DanH, that you don't think there's anything new that the state can do to reduce barriers to equality? If that's your view, I agree. As I said in my only other post on this topic, it's all too easy for those advocating equality to say what shouldn't be done, but extremely hard to say what should be done.

No surprise that the new Doctor Who is a gay actor. I don't know anything about him but good luck "sinking ship" and all that.

Again you seem to wilfully miss my point and read/think whatever you want to. Yes, some cultures have more successful people from within them than others and some are more low achieving than others. But you can’t say someone is Jewish therefore they are rich/successful nor can you say someone is black therefore they will be in a gang. If you speak to Jewish people you’ll realise that they hate this tag. It means people think they are a legitimate target. David Baddiel’s recent book is really good on it. It’s just another form of lazy stereotyping, albeit people think it a positive one so it’s fine. Edited by DanH (25 May 2021 9.34pm)
Just read this and nearly piss@d myself. Dan H lecturing on lazy stereotyping when he called Brexit voters fifty year old carling drinkers. What’s good for the goose..
