All societies are composed of good and bad, however some are far more successful than others. Exploitation of others, is a worldwide reality of elite classes in all societies. It happens both internally and, if the society is successful externally. The British empire was meant to be for the benefit of the British but the reality is that it mostly benefited the elites who headed it. For example, if you have looked into the British rule of India you will find that it cost the British state more than it took out in resources. Of course the British did all the things that empires do....imperialism isn't about egalitarianism. However, compared to just about any other large scale empire we were saints. Edited by Stirlingsays (25 May 2021 10.38pm) Agree with much of that but I think the last sentence is looking back on things with a touch of the rose tinted specs and selective history. Really don’t understand why the British try to pretend large parts of what happened, happened, and to teach the warts and all version of the Empire. This Tory government seem to be on a bit of a culture war to ensure it stays that way too. We’re Britain - we’re always the good guys, right?

However, that's subjective. I don't believe there is an objective way of looking at it. If you panned out you could say that undeveloped societies are always going to be exploited by more developed ones, because elites always want more power. The Romans did that in Britain but ultimately it gave Britain several technological advances....as Monty Python correctly summarized. The same happened to Africa....though I won't deny bad things happened...especially by the Belgians. Sure I probably have rose tinted glasses or maybe you have cracked ones. It depends on who is looking at us and what their perspective is. Edited by Stirlingsays (25 May 2021 10.53pm)

I just think with anything that the full historical picture should be taught and learned from. I know history is written by the victor and all that but trying to censor parts just because they are uncomfortable is one of the worst things we can do. Germany came to terms with Naziism and learnt from it to ensure that history was never repeated. Every other country should be willing to accept the ugly stuff along with the good stuff when it comes to their history.

Every other country should be willing to accept the ugly stuff along with the good stuff when it comes to their history. There is ugly stuff, there is good stuff. The victor writes the narrative....the truth is lost in time. Personally I think Germany went over the top with the guilt trip. The most Hitler gained at the polls was 34 percent. WW2 happened due to an avalanche of mistakes, similar to WW1....essentially kicking the can down the road, as human nature is want to do. Personally....and I accept that this is from my perspective, all societies should teach a history that is positive towards itself, while recognising that it is flawed and human like all others.

We have successfully explained to you that there are more advanced and less advanced countries in the world which is similar to the communities who group together in Britain. Your just so woke to admit it. I agree with you there are individuals who brake the trend but generally the success of communities mirror their country of origin. India, pharmacy of the world, = many Indian doctors in the UK. There are association's whether you like it or not. It's not racist it's pointing out the bleeding obvious. Dan H , would you rather your direct community have an influx of 1000 Jamaicans from Kingston or 1000 from cowes on the Isle of white ? Which one? Edited by dannyboy1978 (26 May 2021 6.34am)

Guys this is the BBC thread and on that note The Daily Mail complaining about the fawning coverage of Max Mosley's death by dear old auntie. Now of course the Mail lost a libel case against him so plenty of sour grapes but why was the BBC so generous in their obituary? Maybe they are trying to appease the right ?

I wouldn't say myself that the Mosley name has much purchase on the right....I mean, Churchill locked his old man up during the war. Mosley had a connection to European nationalism sixty years ago when his father was alive, he given it up by the end of the sixties....The Mail are really going back...talk about resentment....Yet they could go back another thirty more years and find the Mail supporting Hitler. Mosley was funding the Labour party in the nineties, until they thought better of it.....became an awful Blairite. Kind of like the Mail did supporting 'New Labour'.
