Remember the story during the Gulf War about Iraqi soldiers smashing the incubators in the Kuwaiti hospital? A total work of fiction, as it turns out. The only mass baby killers out there are the USAF, and the RAF. We use the excuse that Saddam is a murderer who gasses his own people, while conveniently not mentioning that we sold him the chemicals and technology, and looked the other way when he used them. Still, as long as we've learned our lesson, that's alright then.

GAO has it not occurred to you that these ultra liberal views that you and others hold ,are the reason for so much tension today. Personally, I'd have said it's the divisive "us-and-them" views espoused (on here and) in the tabloid press that is the cause of tension... Come on slug , the broadsheets have had more than their fair share of irresponsible and incorrect reporting. I agree that tabloids can sensationalise stories , and although they have elements of truth in them they can be exagerrated to sell newspapers. I wasn't trying to make out an us and them scenario , it's just that most of us realise , or should , that the more these liberal views are aired the more the extreme right prosper. I agree with you (when you mentioned on another part of the thread) that yes a lot of crime is done by the white English man in this country. Crime has reached epidemic proportions for the one and only reason that there is no link between crime and justice. All this "it's because they're poor or deprived" is a cop-out. The liberal view like giving an 18 year old burglar who has previous as long as his arm ,community service , instead of locking him up for 5 years is not working. P.S This was not intended purely for slug , but if you or anyone could tell me how to quote more than 1 post in a reply, i would be gratefull.

The problem is that this country is being governed at the moment by that very same [ex-university student] minority. Those worthy men who fought and died in two world wars to preserve the culture and way of life of this country would be saddened to see the state this country has arrived at but thanks to those very same men GAO and company are free to express their perverse views free of the fear of reprisal. Your 'ex-university student' jibe is specious, not to say downright libellous. What the hell are you thinking? What's the matter with you? Are you referring to all graduates? Do you think they are all programmed to do the country down or something? Do you ever take a look at the world around you, or do you rely on Richard Littlejohn for your opinions? Do you think the country would be better served by a cabinet of non-gradutes?

From: [Link] Immigration health risks under review The UK government is to launch a major review into the impact of immigration on public health. It will also examine what steps need to be taken, if any, to protect the wider public. The move follows a sharp rise in infectious diseases in the past year. Public health officials are particularly concerned about the increase in tuberculosis cases. High rates A recent report suggested that infection rates in some parts of the UK are now at Third World levels. Official figures also show that three out of four heterosexuals who were diagnosed with HIV last year were from Africa. In addition, the Public Health Laboratory Service estimates that 6,500 migrants with chronic hepatitis B infection are entering the country each year. The Cabinet Office is to carry out a study to establish the facts surrounding immigration and public health. Ministers will use that information to decide if any action is needed. "The Cabinet Office has been commissioned to establish the facts on immigration, asylum and related public health issues," a Department of Health spokesman told BBC News Online. "The review follows an upsurge in infectious diseases globally over the past few years. It is part of good practise." A spokesman for the Home Office said the review would be comprehensive. "The government is undertaking a comprehensive review of imported infections and immigration which is involving discussions between the Department of Health, the Home Office and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office," he told BBC News Online. Immigration experts estimate that as many as one million people are living in the UK illegally. Many of these come from countries with high rates of TB, HIV and other serious infectious diseases.

Sorry to bring this thread back to life, but immigration is a topic I haven't remarked on up till now so now I want my ha'penny worth. The simple fact fact of the matter is that Britain is an island. A small one. That is already overcrowded. We simply haven't got the room to accomodate anybody else, be they law graduates from Harvard or refugees from Albania. But, if we are going to let some asylum seekers in, it seems unreasonable to deny others entry, as who is going to be responsible for deciding the criteria for what constitutes a genuine asylum seeker. It's either got to be a completely closed border or a policy of come one, come all.

An example of what asylum seekers face coming here, courtesy of the Refugee Council: Refugee Council’s AGM hears evidence of Government action that has left victims of torture sleeping rough on the streets A severely traumatised victim of torture has been sleeping rough on the streets of Leeds due to a misguided new asylum law - the Refugee Council - the UK's leading charity is set to reveal at its AGM on January 15, 2003. The 28-year-old Cameroonian – who arrived in the city just four days before claiming asylum on Jan 9 – has been sleeping on the streets since waiting for the Government to decide whether he is entitled to food and shelter(1). The new rule – which came into force on January 8 - has removed the right to support for destitute asylum seekers who do not claim asylum at port, forcing victims of torture, families and children to sleep rough while they wait for government bureaucracy to decide whether they are entitled to a roof over their head and some food. The government has publicly stated that these new rules are aimed at those who have been here for some time and been working illegally in this country, who have then been caught and claim asylum to delay being deported. The rules state that asylum must be claimed ‘as soon as reasonably practicable’ in order for destitute applicants to be eligible for support. But the Refugee Council can reveal that this is a sham. And in fact those who have been forced into homelessness are newly arrived into this country. Margaret Lally, deputy chief executive of the Refugee Council, said: “We are seeing clients who have been in the country for as little as 24 hours who are being turned down for support because it took them a day to claim asylum. “This is nothing short of ludicrous. These people clearly do not fall into the category of people the government says this tough new ruling is aimed at. It makes a mockery of what the government has been claiming. “The result of this draconian piece of legislation is that young children and very vulnerable people – including some who have been tortured by their persecutors back home – have been forced onto the streets in the perishing sub-zero temperatures we’re experiencing at the moment. “The Government must act now and repeal this inhumane piece of legislation to prevent any more suffering. It is clearly targeting groups of people that the Government claims it is not aiming at – so the Government has got it wrong and must put it right.” In her keynote speech at the AGM, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Irene Khan adds Amnesty’s voice to the outcry against this most harsh legislation. Irene Khan’s speech takes place at 3pm at the Refugee Council’s AGM on Wednesday 15 January at the Ismaili Centre, 1 Cromwell Gardens, London SW7 2SL. The business meeting takes place on 2pm. Registration from 12 noon. Ends Case studies from the Refugee Council’s regional offices: 1. The Cameroonian man who visited the Leeds office of the Refugee Council, looking dazed and confused, had been sleeping rough for four nights having fled his country five days earlier in fear of his life and left with nothing but the clothes he stood up in. After claiming asylum on the fifth day when he discovered which country and city he was now in, he is still sleeping rough while he waits for the slow government system to decide whether he is entitled to support. In the meantime he has received hospital treatment and as a result of sleeping rough has a chest infection. Charlotte Cooke, manager of the Yorkshire and Humberside regional office of the Refugee Council in Leeds, said: “It is incredible that someone in dire need of our help is being treated in such an inhumane way. The poor man is clearly extremely traumatised and has told us that he was tortured back home. He has also told us he has been sleeping in a bus stop for the last few days.” 2. One Somalian family with a two-month old baby and a five year old child who tried to claim asylum with a solicitor in Sheffield on January 8 were told this was no longer appropriate and they needed to lodge their claim with the immigration service in Sheffield. Officers in Sheffield said they would have to go to Liverpool or Croydon to lodge their claim. Charlotte Cooke said on this case: “From our knowledge, this destitute family has managed to claim asylum but are still waiting for a decision as to whether they’re entitled to shelter and food. “I daren’t imagine where they’ve spent the last few nights. We can’t do anything to help until they have a letter of eligibility from the Government saying they’re entitled to support.” 3. Another two Iraqi men, aged 21 and 27, who having escaped from their native brutal regime arrived in the country in the middle of the night on January 8 in the Ipswich area, have been sleeping rough since claiming asylum the following day. Tina Hines, manager of the East of England office of the Refugee Council in Ipswich, said: “It’s heartbreaking having to tell these incredibly vulnerable people that we cannot help them in any way. “One of the men broke down in tears as well as the member of staff who had to tell them we had no food or accommodation for them.” The two men, who have both had to see a doctor due to chest infections from sleeping rough, have now been turned down for support by the Government despite making a claim as soon as reasonably practicable.

Geoff Thomas, read my previous thread about what they actually receive - it may make you feel a bit better. And trust me, we accept a fraction of assylum seekers per head compared to, amoungst others, Germany and Sweden.

Slugs, so what's going on then? Why are genuine asylum seekers being failed while thousands and thousands of Albanians are swamping towns like Gt Yarmouth, getting B&B and free cars? I'll tell ya why! Because the system is SWAMPED, because of Britain's liberal attitude to something that is nothing less than full-scale f***ing invasion! Stop all the time wasting gold seeking Albanian criminals flooding in and you might just get the system working again! Edited by Petealiator (17 Jan 2003 11:24am)
