Last night was the best I've ever seen Mateta play, and he was no more than OK. He barely won a header all night but did hold the ball up pretty well. We had tonnes of corners but even at 6'4" he got nowhere near any of them. He managed to make one run in behind and flashed a shot over after Eze put him in, but otherwise didn't threaten at all. He was nowhere to be found when crosses went in, which is probably the thing he should thrive on. I don't want to see anyone seriously hurt of course, but when their goalie had to go off after colliding with Mateta I was as intrigued by the idea JPM might finally be punching his weight as I was concerned that bloody VAR would send him off. In the event, turns out Mateta went nowhere near the keeper, the keeper just slipped and flew into him, so not one to chalk up to some new-found aggression. Ultimately, as poor a player as I think he is, I would apply the same approach to him as any other player: keep him unless we can sign a replacement who is better. It is madness to do otherwise. That said, if anyone is actually offering cash money for him, it must be sorely tempting to the club even if we don't have a replacement available.

It seems his role is to be a focal point and hold the ball up, which he does quite well. He is a big guy and gives opposing CBs a hard time and occupied, creating space for Eze and Olise.

As I said earlier Mateta did play well last night but lets be honest it was against the worst team in the league

People are saying he holds the ball up and is a focal point. Just the sorts of things said about Benteke. We need a centre forward who scores goals not someone who just wins the odd header and holds the ball. People are saying he played well yesterday, were we watching the same game?

I still feel that Edouard has the biggest upside but recently Mateta has stepped up his game and deserves his starting spot! We do need fresh blood either tomorrow or next summer! I assume one will go and one will stay! Right now there is no wrong or right answer to which!
