Long ago i gave up even bothering to understand the rules of Rugby.

the bit that confuses me the most........ is when they hoof the ball a hundred yards forwards and nothing ever seems to be achieved in the action.

Actually I find that one of the easier things to understand, it’s to gain ground to avoid the risk of a turnover in your own half. It’s some of the penalties that are given baffles me, I don’t know how the ref spots them in the mass of bodies

That was tense but well done England. Brilliant break from Earl to set up the drop goal opportunity and some solid defence to slow down their offloading.

Brilliant game this evening.

Have to say, as much beef as I have against RSA (in rugby) I did not want England to be knocked out of two consecutive world cups (Football and Rugby) by the French.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

what, like worse than being knocked out of two consecutive world cups by South Africa?

I was prepared to give rugby a watch last night, particularly as wife's from Cork. However I was dismayed by the appalling standard of commentary on ITV. Sounded like a bunch of technicians chatting away to each other in the pub, no attempt to explain what's going on to the millions watching, most of whom presumably like me, have no idea about penalties, rucks, mauls, 50:22 (what the f's that,?!!!) And don't get me started on what's going on inside the scrum. At one point the Irish no 12 kicked it straight to the All Blacks who then scored a try, which seemed to me a schoolboy error but none of the commentators even mentioned it.I didn't even know Ireland had been awarded a penalty try until I read it in the match report today.Rubbish commentary but enjoyed the passion and commitment from both teams.

Not only the commentators, but also the coverage, action replays explanations etc. etc.
At one point I even thought, how lucky are we to have female commentators in woke football.
So many rules have changed so much in Rugby in recent years, yet no explanations of any dubious incidents. ITV need to up their game.

That’s a good point, as if the French arn’t arrogant enough towards us.

I wanted the South Africans to win, simply because the only rugby World Cup game I’ve ever been to was at West Ham’s ground in 2015 against the USA and we were surrounded by South Africans and it was a great night, lovely people and e great atmosphere.

Yes, yes in my subjective opinion that would be worse.

well I must say, a thoroughly enjoyable weekend of Rugby. the big teams appear to have arrived at the tournament. Missed the Wales Argie, but the three games I saw were all exceptional spectacles, with good levels of skill on show (even England upped their game).
The France RSA game was immense, with RSA outsmarting the French and really exploiting their strengths over them. Ireland NZ, equally immense (although the Irish seemed to lose their heads and make some questionable decisions) and even England Fiji managed to produced a corker.
Bring on the semis... although looking like A RSA vs NZ final...

C'mon Nicholas, half fill your glass full.
Now watch us thump the Springboks.

Pretty impressive the way the South African winger Kolbe ran out to block Ramos' conversion last night.
Arguably it won them the match.

We could do with his speed on our left wing.

There's always a chance!!

I'm not hopeful though, luckily a lifetime of Palace supporting has prepared me for the worst, making the surprise of victory all the more sweeter

Crikey, there'll be some sore and tired bodies this morning. The France v S Africa game was painful just watching on the telly. It was fast paced and tough although I still don't understand the rules. Very pleased France were knocked out on their own ground. They thought they were invincible.

Whilst I agree with some of the negative points made on here about the commentaries, the one bloke I do think who does a good job is Nick Mullins. Clearly knows the game well and makes amusing observations.

As much as I prefer football to rugby, I can't help comparing rugby players to footballers who fall over and roll about for ages after getting a slight nudge. I do wish this play acting element in our game could be eliminated.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
