Saka earned the penalty by going down, fair play, but there was a blatant blocking of Guehi, to stop him, but they never see that .

At least he did a good job of it, it did actually look like he was brought down by Sam, I wonder how many penalties Harry Kane has ‘earned’ by waving a leg in the direction of the keeper and going down?

It was Nketiah btw

we need Olise back of course so it's not just a case of stop Eze/stop Palace as it was with Wilf, and Franca will give us more options than Schlupp can in a front 3. But now we're so solid with centre halves and half backs we can improve if we have proper attacking full backs - Wardy and Mitchell were great last night, but we need more competition there or an upgrade, we can't get Luke Shaw and Kenny Sansom won't come out of retirement, but in our current set up we'd be better off with a Van Arnholt type who was better at attacking than defending. Was proud of the effort and passion last night - just didn't click around their box - Ayew was free on the right side of the box but Lerma's pass was a tad too firm and a degree or two out direction wise so JA couldn't hit it first time and got blocked. That little bit of quality which was missing will return with Olise.

Only having one recognised centre forward within the starting 11 and bench is criminal. When they went down to 10 and looked at the bench you didn't think we could really make their life hard from there. Fresh legs up front who could possibly pose a few problems. Sadly they could probably of gone down to 8 and still we wouldn't break them down at the front. As we don't seem to have anybody in the centre forward role internally it is one in, one out up there, meaning we are relying on off loading Mateta to bring somebody new in. In a way because he wasn't around his departure looks imminent. Hopefully we can get somebody in, Adams, Iheanacho, whoever who can fill that gap, which was even more evident last night after the sending off. However we need to be very careful on the length of contracts we give, as we can't have players "stealing" a wage in the future.

Gordon was on the bench, but it would appear only there as a pine rider.
He has been doing well for the juniors, and apparently at Carlisle but I suppose the gap must be too big to let him take the leap. Just shows how super thin our squad is.

Absolutely agree with all of that sir.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

My reading of our requirements has not been changed by the game last night. We need a goal scorer, preferably one who is strong in the air, attack minded right and left backs and a left winger.

The full back positions are becoming the most important positions on the pitch these days and I’m afraid ours are just defenders. I would even forgo a new winger for a couple of dynamic full backs. Maybe that is why we were after Hall, but that ship has sailed.

Olise is injured, and unlikely to feature before October, as is new boy Franca. Franca is only 19 has barely started a game so based on his age, being in a new country, new league etc the most we can expect this season is as an impact sub.

IMHO we are overly reliant on Eze for any creativity.

Until the sending off, the game was very much how I expected with Arsenal dominating the ball.

After that 'Red', Arsenal very much went on the defensive, we gained the lion's share of possession but encountered a brick wall and we hardly made a dent in it.

The Arsenal penalty was justified and perhaps fingers can be pointed at Johnstone for his decision to go to ground and make the challenge.Definitely not a penalty when Eze went down in the box.

I saw Messrs Southgate and Pardew but never got to strike up a conversation with them.

The way I saw it was Palace put them on the defensive.
OK they went down to ten men, but how often have I seen us in that position and not taken any advantage in fact being scored against. Last night we had them on the ropes for the last 20 minutes after the red card joke.
Either that, or Arteta panicked as he saw the mighty red and blue running away with it, and but for a lack of lady luck, space and strikers we could and should have taken them.
The last 20 we bossed the match but they held on.
That's what I saw anyway.

With the addition of Lerma in midfield we are perhaps less in need of Schlupp’s physicality and in the near term could consider replacing him with either Rak Saki or Ahamada.
Rak Saki could be used on the right and Ayew moved to the left.
Alternatively the system could be tweaked to use Eze and Ahamada as inside forwards with licence to break forward.
This could take some pressure off Eze, and Ahamada looks to have quick feet and a desire to move the ball forward.
This is not to discard Schlupp who still has a role to play, but he does appear to be off the boil at the moment.

Having read this thread just now, it seems to me, most posters are unhappy with our full backs, mostly Mitchell. My Q? to you is, who would you put in next week? Not by the end of the window, or in January, next week.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

I thought Mitchell had a really good game last night, kept Saka at bay and made some good runs forward. Problem is, even if he could whip in good crosses in to the box, who is going to be there to poach a goal? We are so thin in the squad, that Roy had was limited on options to overload them. JRS was high impact when he came on he - he deserves a start after the international break. Take Schlupp out and put Ayew on the left wing. Eze was too deep because they pinned back our pivots as well.
