I have noticed that Ward seems to be so much better on the ball lately. I would honestly happily have him as 1st choice right full back this season and worry about getting ourselves a new left back.

We just need some luck with injuries this year and a couple more signings and we should be capable of a decent year. If Edouard keeps playing he will score 15 goals in a season. He is an excellent finisher.

I always thought Ayew was a much better player when Wilf wasn’t on the pitch. He has been top drawer since Roy has come back and long may that continue. If he could just get his finishing in order he would be raved about.

I know I mentioned on here at half time but Mitchell has to pulled out of that starting 11 asap. He is shockingly bad on the ball and can’t pass further than 3 yards.

There is no fear of us getting relegated this season. We are too well organised and solid. Lets just hope out flair players can start scoring and see where it takes us.

Watching the game yesterday we were crying out for some attacking intent / ability from our fullbacks. The rest of the team played so well (Schlupp being the one exception as he was largely anonymous) that if we had a proper outlet at Right & Left back and a decent striker we would almost be the complete team.

Both Mitchell and Ward were guilty of being taken on too easily and also a number of misplaced forward passes but neither of them link up with the midfield and move the ball forward with any purpose. We were too narrow, it’s ok to move it through Doucouré and Lerma but we need the ability to vary our attacks and bomb down the wings as well. Mitchell seemed not to even cross the half way line yesterday and whereas Ward seems more willing to get forward his ability and speed lets him down.

Wardy is a club legend and is still a half decent ‘No-Nonsense Right Back’ with good positional awareness, a terrific attitude and as a leader he bleeds red & blue. Mitchell has just gone backwards and is a liability.

With the likes of Lewis Hall at LB and Wan-Bissaka at RB, yesterday would’ve been a walk in the park and the scoreline would’ve been far more reflective of our superiority.

A win today and a draw or a win next week is even better. I see no reason why we should expect to lose to Arsenal.

A year ago we were outplayed for 30 minutes and conceded 2.

We then outplayed them for 60 minutes but couldn't convert.

It will be the same save our defence is better and I think Eze will bag a brace.

2-1.

Let’s not go overboard with our win. We had our strongest team possible on the pitch and could only score once against a team that would have been beaten by all the prem teams yesterday. Other than those promoted in my opinion? Corners we conceded yesterday May have resulted in goals scored with much better quality players attacking them against us. Really pleased we won but our squad is weaker than last season at the moment and we were fortunate to have drawn a poor team (presently) as our first match. Plus for me was Lerma and the work ethic of the other 10 but I’m not going overboard until we have some more incomings before the end of the window. And those incomings need to be first teamers dropping some of yesterday’s team to the bench. Still loved getting 3 points away but it was only Sheffield Utd :-)

It was of course great to win the first game of a new season away from home and very welcome. However, it is also important not to forget we were probably playing at best a very average championship team who have just been promoted and are already looking dead certs for the drop. Sheffield United conceded the midfield, thereby handing control of the game to us. our defence looked good because it had very little to do although it was exposed at times when they got the ball forward quickly taking advantage of JW lack of pace and Mitchell poor reading of the game. The reality is we need a striker who can score, 24 attempts with one conversion is not going to keep us out of the relegation battle.

We still need players to come in to bolster both defence and attack and we certainly cannot afford to lose anymore players in the T/F window. The real test of where we are will come against the Gunners in a weeks time on Monday evening.

Who would you drop from the 1st team Palace Chick? Seems like Schlupp is the weakest link up front. But the rest of the attack are playing quite well?

A shrewd analysis, I feel pretty much the same about it.

I'm not going overboard, but I repeat that it shouldn't be assumed that we are certs to lose to Arsenal. They were far from convincing yesterday.

I know this thread is about now, but my memory of last year is slightly different from yours. I remember that we were outplayed for a big chunk of the game, leaving Arsenal 1 up at HT. We then really got into it and it seemed only a matter of time before we equalised. Then against the run of play Saka came in from the right (in front of the Arsenal fans), sent in a low cross and Andersen put it into the net. The reaction of their fans was of great joy but also, I think, of relief.

That's the game I witnessed as well. I would add that Saliba played an absolute blinder for them if my memory is correct.

If we back off Arsenal and look like the proverbial lambs we will be slaughtered.

If we’re to stand up to them a bit and have confidence in ourselves we could well rattle them enough to cause an upset.

I post that only as I’m sure Roy with all his experience and expertise consults this forum in hopes to catch my tactical insight

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

He's smarter than the government anyway. They'd be fizzing with competence if they came to the HOL for advice.
