How many Spurs fans have been arrested for screaming Yid all day long, or is that a different kind of racist abuse that doesn’t apply? The difference is that Spurs fans chant Yid as a positive thing. Whether they should or not is a different argument. They are not using it to belittle a Jewish player or any other individual and they are not (from my understanding) making an anti-Semitic statement.

We are now all under the watchful eye of big brother with the willing help of the useful idiot. Sure, football crowds always contain a percentage of dickheads, as does wider society, but we seem to have got our priorities seriously distorted. A bit of antisocial behaviour should not be making the headlines on SKY Sports News. That is driven by an entirely self serving agenda which is all about commerce and dollar signs. Try a little less faux outrage and a little more thinking, I'd suggest. Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (09 May 2023 2.40pm) Some good points. End of the day what some people find racist & offensive others do not. Sadly for this bloke there are laws.

The fans might think that it is positive, but historically Jews consider the use of the word to be offensive unless used by another Jew. Maybe it’s a bit like a black person calling another black person the n word. God forbid that any of us ever attempted that, even in jest. Anyway, this is straying into a thread that is better suited to be discussed elsewhere on the forum.

The term "yid" is anti-semitic entirely dependent on usage, not by definition. When it's intended to be derogatory, then it is antisemitic and when it's not so intended, it isn't. The principle takeaway here, it seems to me, is to highlight just how difficult it is to police usage of the term.

Interestingly, the only time I have seen him be sensitive and express sincere hurt over a racially motivated incident was when somebody pulled the same stunt as the subject person of this thread at his family when a kid, which gives some good insight and context (given his usual mockery and humour based around his Korean heritage). I also believe Bobby has been accused of racism himself most predominantly toward other 'Asians' which again puts his hurt into context.

Not a comment on the subject, but reading this thread and its equivalent on the BBS, I'd say that broadly the BBS is more liberal, and HOL appears to be more to the right on the political spectrum. Does that observation strike others as correct?
