The Pulis team was far worse and should probably have been a championship side. However, he concentrated on defensive solidity, team ethic and set pieces. As for the first two - we haven't got those. We look like we've just started to work on set pieces - about five seasons too late.
First thing any team wanting to avoid relegation needs to do is be defensively solid. We look weak. Second thing is to score goals. Pulis noted we probably wouldn't score many and I believe we topped the set piece goal statistics (or were second after Liverpool). We're usually near the bottom now and we still don't score goals. We also concede a lot from set pieces - which certainly would not have happened under Pulis.
For an analogy, we're a team with some BMWs and a couple of Lambos when, in reality, we need Skoda Yetis for our environment.
We play like a top side, rather than being pragmatic about what we have. However, let's say PV was fed up with our team basically being a bit weak? Who would he pick? It would be Tomkins, Luka maybe Hughes. Hardly game changing stuff. We have little choice but to carry on as we do with our current personnel.

In terms of the defence, Pulis signed Scott Dann but there were a number of defenders who had been signed by Freedman IE : Ward,Moxey, Parr,Ramage, Delaney,Gabbidon.
I believe Pulis signed Kelly and Hangeland in pre-season but he left and they never played under him.

Certainly. This just reinforces the point that in 10 seasons and £1bn later, the playing side hasn't advanced at all. Actually its gone backward, as the things you mention at the start of your post don't exist in this current outfit.

When Tony Pulis was appointed, we were second from bottom after 12 games.
As has been stated we finished that season in 11th place.

When Tony Pulis was appointed, it was a cloudy day, were second bottom after 12 games - each game consisting of two 45 minute halves. As has been stated we finished that season in 11th place and wore red and blue in an unconventional style.

Am I getting this right, Willo.

I jest...

An obvious matter the last few games have highlighted is that we now leak goals on a regular basis, whereas earlier in the season we didn't and the goal difference was relatively neutral. This is PV's biggest challenge for the next set of games.

If we start with 4-3-3 at Chelsea, and try to pass out from the back, we will get Hammered, whatever happened at Fulham, it is now all about organisation and dare i say, Defending the point, and play longer, counter attack, Sunday will tell us whether any realism has got into PVs head.

Inclined to agree.

A really frustrated part of me also wants to sarcastically say: 'now, I know it's very different from what we've been doing, but you're going to have to actually run and put some f**king effort into this match. It's Chelsea away, one of the richest, most recently successful clubs in the league and they're in a spot of bother, take the game to them as we're not going to outclass them in a technical duel!!!'.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I think it will be 4-3-3 with the ball 4-5-1 without it.

we've got a horrible run of games till April - we might be lingering in the nether regions by then, and if we don't get some decent midfielders in this window I fear for our safety. I think PV has done well to tweak the midfield game by game to keep the oppo guessing but he's run out of solutions because he hasn't get the players - Jairo, Hughes, Luka are just not good enough - Doucoure desperately needs a partner, and we probably need two midfielders.

We need new players and am worried that Freedman is not unearthing any talent. We need the Brentford equivalent to find the stars like with Benarama, Toney, etc from lower divisions.

During the Aston Villa/Leeds game, it was mentioned about Everton interest in Inge and I was thinking unless the price is too much where is our interest in that type of player. While we definitely need some midfield help, wouldn't it be nice to have some composure in the box. Not to mention, a differently alternative to Zaha on PKs.
