I thought the first half performance owed as much to Saints being poor as us being good and there was no chance of the second half being the same.

At one point in the second half it appeared like a Sunday league game with no football played in the middle third and both teams running from one end to the other.

We're incredibly wasteful with our final pass at times but luckily for us Saints were equally so with their finishing.

Guaita is up there with the best GK's in the 45 years I've been a fan. Olise and Zaha the best of our outfield today.

Well done Luka

Agreed. I don’t rate him usually, but Luka had a decent game. Olise and Eze gave the ball away too much. I thought Ayew played well when he came on, as did Hughes. Hated how Zaha didn’t get back onside, he literally had to take two steps, but just stood there. That being said, Southampton always play the same against him, which is repeated fouling. Luckily we have other flair players now, so it doesn’t work as well.

Guaita was definitely our MoM, made a few nice saves to preserve the win.

Bring on the Hammers

Almost a third of the season gone and I’d of taken level on points with Liverpool, including playing both them and city away, every night of the week.

We tired today and suffered for it in the second half which could of cost us the game. That said we could have scored 5 first half.

If anything, I preferred that performance to a barnstorming one where which may have been seen as a ‘one off’ reaction to Everton and unsustainable. We looked the better team and I think we are however we were sloppy at times and there is still a lot to be desired not least of all some incoming midfielders.

I don’t think 4 points is unattainable from the next two if not more. Job done today, of course room for players, squad, PV etc to improve but we’re looking comfortable and certainly much better than we ever have in this PL stay.

Great win, well done the fellas, let’s hope come the World Cup ‘palace anxieties’ are at an unfamiliar low and we can look forward to 2023.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

3 points against a team as good as us.

Top half.

Some recovery after last week.

Hard to watch 2nd half but what do you honestly want or expect?

Some fans have seriously unrealistic expectations.

Agreed. People saying we were fortunate but had Zaha been better with his movement when Ayew was through we could have also had a goal, we had a few other chances as well. We didn’t play as well as the first half but did we expect Southampton to not improve?

Substitutions worked fine as well. Ayew done very well when he came on. Hughes was brought on to give Luka support and Jairo helped nullify the threat of their tricky young winger that came on at the end and was given Mitchell trouble. Well thought out subs imo, unfortunately it’s the calibre of player PV has on the bench that’s the problem.

Should have been out of sight by half time and some very sloppy play by us nearly gifted Che Adam’s a couple goals.

This season has got to be the most even the League has ever been so delighted with the 3 points. .

It is nice to see Edouard come good. He is looking more confident by the week and will only get better. We havn’t had a regular six yard box goal scorer for a long time.

For those complaining about PV's subs, or Hughes in particular...So'ton was running wild in the second half, and they had numerous great scoring chances. After Hughes came on, and later Riedewald, they didn't get another scoring chance.

I'm not saying Hughes is great, but when he came on, we saw the match out much easier than we did before he came on.

Interesting to see you refer to Sunday league - midway through the second half that was exactly what it reminded me of - clearly we did well in the first half & Southampton upped their game in the second, we were fortunate to come away with the points, several players were virtually on their knees with about 15 minutes to go so clearly they had put a shift in (Mitchell looked exhausted) Luca had the best game I have seen from him for a long time, Vincente saved us several times - if either side had made more of their chances it could have been a very different score -

Actually before the game in the bar I was talking to some visitors from Denmark who had come over to see Andersen in action, they asked me what I thought the score would be - I said it could be anything from 0:0 to 3:3 with any permutation in between.

4 points on the road may be a tough ask given our poor away form.

Southampton changed how they were playing from the start of the second half and pressed us like Everton did the week before. Luckily we got away with it and should have made those substitutions earlier to strengthen our midfield. PV seems to like to play with just one central midfielder which worked in the first half as Southampton didn’t press us. I can only see problems ahead if we continue with just one central midfielder? But, well done Luka yesterday as he like Dacoure does carried our midfield in the first half and then played well with Hughes and Reidewald alongside in the second half after they came on.
