If Digne was on the line and the ball hit is hand accidentally it would be a penalty, the header was on target so it had to be a penalty

VAR has become like the old refereeing decisions, you hope they balance themselves out over the course of the season. Villa will feel really aggrieved with the penalty decision, and I'm we sure we would if it gone against us. I remember a couple of seasons we had a pen given against us by VAR in a game against Everton when calvert-lewin literally headed the ball against Wards arm, he did even move his arm.

It kind of did even out yesterday. We wouldn’t have had the Schupp goal ruled offside, and wouldn’t have had the penalty.

Digne had his hands raised and out to the side.
In my opinion it was a penalty so well done to the VAR.
I did say to someone at the game that Martinez has a good record of saving penalties and Zaha was fortunate with the rebound.

Good win. As PV said we competed for all of the game and were worthy winners on the balance of play. Would easily take 5 points from the first 5 games at the beginning of the season and now look good for a few more. Solid start. COYP !!

I agree with another poster VAR should be based on the torso not any other body part (just like athletics). If you are a striker facing goal it is more likely that your arms and feet will be forward so the advantage is with the defending team.

Wilf has a goal ruled out because him or another palace player had an arm offside.

I hate to agree with the boy Lineker, but why not keep it simple and judge it on the position of the feet? The sport is called football, after all. Just plot the furthest-forward point of the attacker's foot and compare it with with the furthest-back point of the last defender's foot.

Thats the problem, its about opinion, not fact. We saw both sides of VAR in that match. Schlupps goal should of stood, it was impossible to say 100% it was offside, so benefit should go to the striker. The penalty was never a penalty, if an attacker can jump with his arms up, then surely so can the defender, the ball hit him from very close range, he didnt move his hand towards the ball.
So with VAR you win some, you lose some, just like you did before it was used, so whats the point of it?

Even the pundits on MOTD were perplexed by re the lines were drawn for the offside decision. They also felt penalty decision was wrong and I have to say I'd feel really miffed if that had been one of our defenders who'd been penalised.

Finally back home from staying with my brother due to train problems yesterday.

Obviously a great result, but also so refreshing to see us outplay the opposition as we did. We were a team where the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. Villa were a disparate group of expensive individuals with no clear idea of how they should be playing.

I thought Eze had his best game since his injury. He and Wilf are developing a very good partnership. Increasingly add Olise into the mix and opposition defences could have torrid times.

However, credit should be given to both Edouard and Ayew for the way they pressed the Villa defence and the number of times they panicked the keeper into kicking the ball into touch thereby giving the momentum back to us.

One little footnote re Edouard would have buried the Mateta chance. Perhaps, but I'm not sure he would have outfought the defender for that ball. Just my opinion, of course.

Nice summary and agree

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Agree with that. Wonder what Edouard would have done with the Hughes chance though.

I agree. If you see the Arsenal second goal and the lines drawn, I would say more offside than Eduoard.

One doesn't have to move the hand towards the ball under current rulings to be penalised by a penalty.Digne had his hands raised and away from his body, his hand made contact with the ball, accordingly in my humble opinion the penalty was the correct decision.Well done to the VAR.
