I think the killer instinct has been mentioned many times and it is very much lacking. A deadly striker is difficult to find for a 'lowly' EPL club like Palace. I know it is a preposterous comparison but take a team like Liverpool who can be rather average one game and still come up with the goal(s) to get three points. This gulf in ability between the top and the rest of us is only going to get worse.

It definitely puts into perspective how the two games against Man City is our crowning glory this season.

I thought it was a good 0-0 to watch as I thought it was only us that looked like scoring. It seemed easier to contain Leeds than the chaos football played under their previous manager.Where are all the Joel Ward knockers? I thought he was fantastic last night and obviously PV rates him highly to play him on his wrong side as well. Our two centre backs are silky smooth and touch wood seem to be non injury prone due to their great reading of threats and as so rarely need to be diving in with last ditch tackles, except one example from Anderson on the half way line last night. If we can keep CG next season and bring in a couple of players next year to improve our play in the final third of the pitch we will be winning tight games like this next season.

Apropos the chance for Mateta at the far post in the first half, I believe had he cut inside rather than outside he would have been in front of Llorente and he would have had a better chance to score.

In terms of his first opportunity from a long ball, I would need to peruse this on the match coverage on the television, however at present I think had he attempted to loft the ball over the keeper earlier he might have scored, but he waited until Meslier was close to him.
I of course might have a different viewpoint on viewing the recording on my television!

Watching it live I thought Mateta had lobbed the keeperand that it was cleared off the line.
However,in watching the replay on TV the effort was off target anyway when the defender cleared the ball.
In the early stages of the game it looked as if Mateta had the beating of the central defenders for pace and we got some joy from balls into the channels.
For some reason we stopped playing these passes.

I think most fans think Mateta is the best of the 3, but he isn't brilliant, he is the ideal second striker on the bench, but the problem is getting the ideal CF, i don't see any point in keeping Edouard or Benteke next season, sell if we can, but that's a big if

An improved performance from the Newcastle game. We were at em from the start and looked like the most likely to score. Eze showed a few glimpses of his former pre injury self but still seems to lack sharpness. Good to see Olise get half an hour, Ayew is probably better at tracking back and hustling but when it comes to attacking he lacks Olises ability to make something magic happen. Plenty of chances to score .... on another day one would have gone in.

It's been said already, but more clinical finishing and we would have won last night.

I felt certain Gallgher was going to score right at the end, but he hit it straight at the keeper...a more composed finish was called for.

Leeds were fortunate that Darren England was the referee last night. A more experienced and more competent official would have not allowed them to get away with so many of their tricks.

I think you are right there Willo, if I have one criticism of Mateta it is his movement inside the box, it does not suit his position in the team IMHO.

There are usually a few times, as there were yesterday, when you do question why he moves as he does.

One in particular for me was in the second half, we'd worked the ball out to the right quite well and Wilf had the opportunity to put one in, as he did. Now, you can blame the midfield and others for not supporting but strangely Mateta was the only player in the box and ran towards the near post with Wilfs decent looking cross inevitably going over his head and to nobody. The instinct was to blame Wilf for crossing aimlessly but Mateta, being the Centre Forward (+ 6ft3" ) and only player in the box, ran to a position that was nigh impossible to score from, which I found very odd (and irritating).

I distinctly remember on numerous occasions overhearing forwards being told, and this has been echoed by many in the professional game down the years, that Strikers should aim to always be 'between the sticks' when the ball is coming into the box. If you are forever lurking beyond the back post or running past the near, you are far less likely, if at all, to score.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

To be fair, whilst the cutting edge was lacking, and we so often one decent pass away from an opening, we managed to find the intensity that we'd been missing in the last couple of games.

A couple of positives for me:

Eze - guilty of dwelling on the ball at times, and faded a bit, but, lets remember how little he has played. He is capable of playing the passes that others cant, and IMO we are going to be a better footballing size with him in the team. I'd start him every game now to get some sharpness back.

No Kouyate - as much as I value what he adds to the team, I think we are a better footballing team with out him. Watching Macca in that deeper role, picking balls of the CB and turning, is critical to us playing with some fluidity. I'd only use CK when we need added hight, or against top 6.

If we continue to play with one CF and we buy Nketiah, is that with Mateta and Plange enough for the one position, Plange is supposed to be an AJ type, whether he is ready yet is another point, i am very surprised the PV hasn't used more U23 players on the bench

Most teams used to play with two strikers.
When crosses were played in one striker would attack the near post and the other would move to the far post so whether a cross was over or under hit there was a chance that a striker would be at the end of a cross.
With the trend of playing one striker crosses can appear aimless if they are not actually spot on.
You are relying on attacking midfielders to get in the box to support the lone striker, which Gallagher was doing effectively at the beginning of the season.

He won’t all the time we still need points, once we’re mathematically safe we might see a couple, which the way we’re going will be the last game against Man U
