Anyway, back to the Ukraine situation, see this on the bbc . . . [Link]

Sign of easing tensions?

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Potato blight did affect other places, notably Holland and also Scotland. Plenty died though not as many as in Ireland. The bottom line was Irish reliance on the potato. They were actually healthier, with longer life expectancy than the English. But obviously not when the major crop was spoilt.
Millions of pounds was donated to Ireland at the time: Queen Victoria giving the most. However, the poor law system and poor houses could not cope. The system had been systematically underfunded as it would have meant a rate increase for the local community. Most died of illness in the years after the famine was over. Estimates at deaths are between 200,000 (low) and a million or more (high). There is no argument that more left than died. As someone pointed out Trevelyan does not come off well in this history. I could say a lot more but it still won't solve it for you! I guess we'll still have the Hollywood version for a long time. Top o the morning etc.
For a feel good story look into the Quakers and the Choctaws' response to the famine.

Does anyone not think this was just a bit of 'look what we can do' if we really want to from putin. Now maybe he's hoping for a few restrictions to be lifted as a good will gesture.

I'll say this as my final word on the Irish famine discussion...apologies to those pointing out the sidetrack

I'm a proud Englishman, I'm also proud that my genes come from all over these islands and by extension Europe too.

While I would unreservedly apologise for what Cromwell did....though plenty of English died fighting against him as well. On anything subsequent, while it seems to me that the British get the blame for anything going. I would say that if any British ancestor, overlord, administrator or soldier has willfully wronged the Irish then you have my regret.

While none of us are responsible for the sins of the fathers, we also take pride in their achievements as we are their genetic descendants....and I do take pride in many things that the British and Irish as well have achieved.

We are genetically the same peoples and we are undergoing the same challenges.

It's either a ploy to lower guards or Putin has heard what he wants.

thanks Sterling. If it is any recompense....we ALL are descended from people who did dodgy stuff in the past. We may need to go back to the Yamnaya to find it....but genocide is in the DNA of all humans.

the christians call it original sin. Darwinians call it the selfish-gene. Romantics call it 'a fit of pique'.

most of the time, the crimes are forgotten in History.

Ukraine ? did Biden blink first ? maybe he should ask his Nurse to up his meds ?

As talks are now showing signs that tensions are easing, it does appear that Putin was just flexing his (Russia's) muscles to gauge reaction.

But, if it does all calm down I guess we'll never know what the bullyboy really had in mind.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

If he finds out that Trump has been on the phone to Putin his blood pressure may just explode!

the Ukraine buildup would never have happened with Trump.

Trump was a businessman. Good at making deals.

His progress with Korea was pretty good overall. And i suspect himself and Putin were both respectful of each other.
