Funny isn’t it...all those who said he should be sent back to Mainz have gone a little quiet...wonder why.... Dougie has done a great job and got him for a steal of a price if he continues to knock them in....

There’s is nothing funny about it. He was woeful and even the people who see him every day in training were close to ending his deal. It wasn’t just fans moaning.

Fair play to the chap he has turned things around and is now our main striker. He is not perfect but over all he is out best option as a CF.

The pundits seem to be settling on a description of Mateta as 'awkward' or 'leggy' or 'giving the defenders a problem' - I doubt many see him as an exceptional talent, or what to make of him.

But what I quite like about Mateta is that he really believes he can and will score.. While Benteke really doesn't give me the impression he thinks he will ever hit the back of the net.

Would Benteke have laid the ball off centre park and then sprinted to the box to be on the end of something? Highly unlikely. Put in the work and get rewarded! Also his sprint opened up the pitch for Wilf (who worked hard himself) and the CG pass.

I thoroughly agree.

Benteke has something to offer but his behaviour in front of goal reminds me of that song with the line ‘to reach the unreachable star’. Mateta acts as though he is owed a goal, which is a huge difference.

One defence for Big Ben may be however his pregame briefing has gone far beyond ‘just stick it in the back over the net’ in years past, hence his mentality/approach may have altered.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Benteke’s Palace career is as good as over. I’m sure he will fit in with a team somewhere but I can’t think over a single team in the Premier league where he would be wanted.

Thé Impossible Dream.
The difference is that Mateta is busy climbing the hill whereas Big Ben is now sliding down the other side.

You'd think a big tall CF would be all we need to complete a super attack. I still think that's true but Benteke ain't it. He gives the impression he has to concentrate to walk properly.

Nobody could possibly say he hasn't been given enough chances.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

As you all know I've been a big critic of Mateta, but fair play to him, he's come on leaps and bounds. Ability wise, he's still the worst of our strikers by a mile, but he's working hard and making PV keep him in there. So fair play.

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

Could PV have got a tune out of sorloff as he is doing with mateta. Not sure if he was gone before PV arrived.

Sorloth was long gone before PV came. In any case, I would venture to say 'unlikely' as IMO Sorloth has far too high an opinion of himself and isn't quick or nimble enough for the style we now try to play.
