'The Brexit Ashes' as some are unkindly remarking. It has all the hallmarks. Ill-considered totally avoidable shambles.

You have served up such an obvious dish ripe for riposte .....but I just don't have the required malevolence to serve it. Edited by Stirlingsays (29 Dec 2021 6.19pm)

'Cricket is ruled by upper-class white men, deluded about their abilities. It’s hard not to see a parallel between the Ashes shambles and Brexit'. Just seen this by Martin Kettle - Guardian.

What colour is Martin Kettle? Oh look...white and upper class. Give up your job then Kettle, stop whining about others and live these ideas. The argument isn't even true anyway. India have more power in world cricket than any other country. He's talking about the past....indeed, the past was much better quality at the test level, precisely because it was less money focused.

There's a story on BBC Sport today: New Zealand batter Taylor to end international career. I was thinking maybe similar corporal punishment could be administered to the England players.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

The proof of this series will be in the viewing figures. I don't know of anyone who watched it. The Aussies are probably loving it, but there's not that many of them.

Amongst my pals, we've watched as much as we can bearing in mind the time zone issues. I was up watching from 4:30 this morning but I can imagine viewing figures plummeted after the Melbourne Test. Was surprised to see our opening partnership last 11 overs for 30 runs this morning - Crawley looked very assured and scoring freely. Hameed looked like he just didn't want to get out - which is fine if you don't get out. It makes a big difference if the openers can see off the new ball, it should make scoring for Root and co easier against a softer ball. If no rain, run rate of 3.65 per over to win. I'm the ultimate optimist, if we can score 100 with the loss of only 1 wicket by lunch, you never know...
