This one paragraph shows how clueless you are, along with you're childish insults tbf you defended Roy's decision to have Kane take corners for England, so you're not exactly on firm ground yourself. Neither of you are going to concede your opinion, even though deep down you both know that elements of your arguments are flawed. But please carry on because it's very amusing for the rest of us.

Yes. I do so tire of the continual putting down of Mr Hodgson. Every thing you say is spot on. Other managers were told the time of day by Steve regarding expenditure: next to nothing. Hence Pullis and Big Sam walking. However, Roy took on a job that the others were scared of and steered us to the position we're in now. What's more, he did so with grace, intelligence and a refusal to play the stupid wind-up games beloved by others such as the puerile Mourinho. In my opinion, Mr Hodgson is one of the best managers we have ever had and how good it is to see that he chose to come back to his boyhood club for one last shout. So many on here are quick to disparage him but not me. I am, and will always be a Roy man. Thank you Mr Hodgson, A true gent and a Palace legend. Totally agree. He was employed to do a job, which he did without any fuss and drama. He may of not been to everyone’s liking, but he wasn’t employed to be liked. Dragging up old stuff with England, Liverpool etc is pointless. We were lucky to have a gentleman to steer us through a difficult period.

I would add "sour-faced" after "puerile" though with regard to that odious man.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

I get why Townsend was told to defend. When you have aged slow central defenders you have to protect them. That is what Roy did. It was painful to watch and I'm glad he's gone but I cheered him to the rafters at that game v Arsenal and felt quite choked. Proper Palace hero - flawed but aren't they all? So yes we know he didn't set us up to play exciting football and it was embarrassing watching us let Burnley become Barcelona.

All I would add is that comparing whatever Vieria does with what Hodgson did is comparing apples with pears, as they have such different squads to work with.

I'm bored with you now,Roy is a great man and manager, and that's indisputable, end of. Hard, though, not to note that Wilf threw a lot of shade at Roy in his comments after the Tottenham game about how we no longer hoof it, actually play through the opposition, and it's clearly a far more enjoyable experience for him. There is no doubt that Roy is a great man and he's also been a very good manager but that said he's a formula manager; not particularly adaptable and one who sticks to his own way of doing things. Those ways are limited; they suit some clubs (WBA, Fulham, Palace). Less so other clubs (Liverpool, England). I don't think Roy deserves the disrespect some here show him but at the same time, I also don't think he deserves some of the outlandish praise. Yes, he kept us up on a very limited budget but he also showed almost no ambition and if he saved the club, he also failed over four years to progress it very much. What he did was admirable but far from stupendously great. My feeling is one of respect and gratitude for his efforts, but I can't say that I miss him at all. Some of last season's performances were really hard to watch and at the end of the day, entertainment and ambition/purpose do count for at least something. Edited by sydtheeagle (21 Sep 2021 2.01am) Even I can accept that. He did the job he needed to whilst he was here. The reason some questionable moments in his career are brought up time and time again is to highlight that some can simply see no wrong. Others have quite fairly pointed out that non of the other players that have left are doing that well, so it could just be a purple patch for Townsend. Debate is good when people have points they can back their point of view up with. Rather than recycling the same old soundbites.
