Every thing you say is spot on. Other managers were told the time of day by Steve regarding expenditure: next to nothing. Hence Pullis and Big Sam walking.

However, Roy took on a job that the others were scared of and steered us to the position we're in now.

What's more, he did so with grace, intelligence and a refusal to play the stupid wind-up games beloved by others such as the puerile Mourinho.

In my opinion, Mr Hodgson is one of the best managers we have ever had and how good it is to see that he chose to come back to his boyhood club for one last shout.

what palace players would you say have hugely improved since Roy left ?

None so far. However Loftus-Cheek gives due credit to Roy for helping him improve his game. So much so he became an England player during his stay with us!

Hard, though, not to note that Wilf threw a lot of shade at Roy in his comments after the Tottenham game about how we no longer hoof it, actually play through the opposition, and it's clearly a far more enjoyable experience for him. There is no doubt that Roy is a great man and he's also been a very good manager but that said he's a formula manager; not particularly adaptable and one who sticks to his own way of doing things. Those ways are limited; they suit some clubs (WBA, Fulham, Palace). Less so other clubs (Liverpool, England). I don't think Roy deserves the disrespect some here show him but at the time, I also don't think he deserves some of the outlandish praise. Yes, he kept us up on a very limited budget but he also showed almost no ambition and if he saved the club, he also failed over four years to progress it very much. What he did was admirable but far from stupendously great. My feeling is one of respect and gratitude for his efforts, but I can't say that I miss him at all. Some of last season's performances were really hard to watch and at the end of the day, entertainment and ambition/purpose do count for at least something.
