I remember how big he was and how excited the crowd were at the way he played. We paid £30,000 for him in a joint deal with Willie Wallace.
He’s had health problems but is still with us at 78.

Great goals.
Favourite goals and
goals that lit up a drab game?

I remember watching what looked like being a forgettable 0-0 draw against Leeds some 40 years ago
UNTIL
up popped Vince Hilaire to curl one from the edge of the box at the Whitehorse Lane end with minutes of the game left (or that's how I remember it).

A good example of that was Wimbledon away when Wrighty scored a hat trick. I remember it was a dreadful game, but then out of no-where Wrighty’s done the business, one of which was a great lob from not far inside their half

Steve Staunton's against Tranmere in 2000 from near the away dugout has been mentioned before on this website, not least by me. But what I still recall is my reaction to it. Rather than jump up or throw my arms in the air, I sat stupefied and motionless for a few moments, then leant forward and buried my head in my hands. My mate next to me thought for a moment I'd had a nasty turn. The ball had been coming towards me the whole way and it seemed to be in the air for ages. I think I couldn't believe what I'd just seen.

Mind you, as someone recalled earlier in this thread, Cliff Holton also scored from around halfway - which I heard about at the time but didn't witness.

Didn't that come second in GOTS? Lost to a non-league Yeovil effort against Leeds. My memory may be playing tricks I suppose.

Whatever Hughes effort was better IMO - never seen a ball hit that hard before or since. Like a tracer shell. Can't find a clip, cameras may not have been invented back then!

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

I started this thread in '21 after Benteke's goal at the AMEX.

Eze's second goal yesterday was glorious and, impetuous it may be, but I am in awe of him as a player, and that goal has to rank high in the all time greats at Selhurst (in my very humble opinion).

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Amazing because he was so useless.

He scored a goal?

I was there. We tend to remember the 2nd goal from Hughes but his first one was mighty impressive. We also tend to eulogise about the 5-0 tanning of Man Utd the following season, but to put things in context, United were at that stage scrabbling around near the bottom of the table, whereas Sheff Utd were up around the top of the table when we beat them 5-1.

I've seen the video many times, although it was before my time as a Palace fan. Eze's goal yesterday was very similar to Hughes' 2nd. Same cut-in before hitting it from roughly the same spot. McCormick's shot was incredulous!

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)
