Racism sells. People love it when they have the chance to display their own anti-racist credentials. It's the middle-class version of when the inhabitants of a council estate think there is a paedo living amongst them. That level of pitchfork bearing, torch waving hysteria. A genuine dopamine rush. I genuinely think that if there was a nationwide scheme of awarding stars, like you might see on an employee in a fast-food restaurant, for being 'anti' all the usual stuff, then it would become a glorious pissing contest as people sort to out do each other. Virtue signalling is just a form of addiction. And like all junkies, difficult to reason with the addicts. Gotta have their fix, no matter what. You realise some people are actually just nice people don’t you?

No doubt some do but I find it genuinely sad that some people go through life believing that of everyone. It must be exhausting and age you awfully being that cynical about everyone. There are some good eggs out there. Not as many as I’d like but some people are genuinely just decent people that give a sh*t about others. Edited by DanH (16 Jul 2021 9.03pm)

Edited by DanH (16 Jul 2021 9.03pm) You think that people who disagree with progressive ideas don't care about others? I think what's probably more accurate is that they have different perspectives on what makes a better world.

Nah that’s putting words in my mouth. You were a teacher. I know you care about others (ish ). To think everyone who’s anti-racist and similar is just doing it out of some cynical virtue signalling motive rather than just doing it because it’s the right thing to do is depressing to me.

I'm not sure that's quite what he means either. As for me, I don't believe in 'anti racism', because I believe the concept, like egalitarianism itself, is fundamentally flawed and contradictory. However, there are aspects of it that I like....like the worth of human life (which is why I'm generally anti abortion). However, what you think is being a 'nice person' involves a system that is pretty nasty to people who don't agree with it......whereas someone like me accepts the right of everyone to hold different views. Indeed, I think the better solution is that ideologically people should be able to live in places that reflect their beliefs......which is kind of happening as we speak in America for example. The differences between California and Texas for example really reflect different ways of seeing the world. I think the better way forward for the west is more social decentralisation as a way of avoiding internal conflict and repression. Edited by Stirlingsays (16 Jul 2021 9.32pm)

Did you do that to make yourself feel good or did you do it because you were trying to help someone worse off than you? Matov’s point was that people only did what you did out of some sort of virtuous point scoring rather than just doing something that’s ‘nice’ and helping out someone else.

I do it because i can, whenever I can. There were years past where a meal was a struggle for me and my wife and daughter. Beans on toast for a week. They may actually be better off than me and blagging it.
